Government Flies ?Stressed? Sea Turtles to Florida to Escape the Cold

More than two dozen sea turtles described by the Associated Press as ?stressed? by cold ocean waters have been airlifted from New England to balmy Florida.

The Coast Guard flew the turtles to Orlando on Friday, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the federal agency that apparently oversees sea-turtle protection) reportedly arranged the flight.? The Daytona Beach News Journal reports that 20 turtles were taken to SeaWorld Orlando, five loggerhead turtles were taken to the Volusia County Marine Science Center, and three other facilities in Florida also took in the displaced creatures.

A New England Aquarium spokesman says a record number of endangered and federally protected sea turtles have been treated this year for cold stress.? Not willing to take any chances, The Daytona Beach News Journal adds that some are being treated at a separate $4.5 million ?state of the art? facility.

?Taxpayers decided with the Endangered Species Act that they wanted the federal government to protect endangered species,? spokesman Tony LaCasse said.

He added: ?A great majority of the resources and money used to take care of these turtles is raised privately.?

SeaWorld officials say an unseasonably warm November delayed the turtles? exit from Cape Cod Bay this year. When water temperatures suddenly dropped, the turtles developed hypothermia and washed ashore, prompting the crisis.

The turtles will be returned to their natural habitat when water temperatures are warmer.

Drought in the Horn of Africa delays migrating birds

The catastrophic drought last year in the Horn of Africa affected millions of people but also caused the extremely late arrival into northern Europe of several migratory songbird species, a study from University of Copenhagen published today in Scienceshows. Details of the migration route was revealed by data collected from small back-packs fitted on birds showing that the delay resulted from an extended stay in the Horn of Africa.

The extensive 2011 drought in the Horn of Africa had significant consequences for European songbirds such as thrush nightingale and red-backed shrike. These birds visit northern Europe every spring to mate and take advantage of ample summer food resources. However, their spring migrating route from southern Africa to northern latitudes passes directly through the Horn of Africa, where the birds stop to feed and refuel for the next stage of their migration.

- Our research was able to couple the birds' delayed arrival in Europe with that stopover in the Horn of Africa. Here they stayed about a week longer in 2011 than in the years before and after 2011. Because of the drought, the birds would have needed longer to feed and gain energy for their onward travel, causing delayed arrival and breeding in Europe. This supports our theory that migrating animals in general are dependent on a series of areas to reach their destination, says Associate Professor Anders T?ttrup from the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate at the University of Copenhagen.

Data loggers as a backpack

The late spring arrival of European songbirds such as thrush nightingale and red-backed shrike perplexed researchers and bird watchers in 2011. This mystery was even greater considering these songbirds' tendency to arrive progressively earlier over the last 50 years as climate change has made its impact. By placing small data loggers on the backs of several birds in the autumn before their migration to Africa, and retrieving them in the spring when the birds returned to Europe, the scientists were able to trace the migration route and stopover sites. These data revealed a delay in the particular stopover in the Horn of Africa. Additionally, it was noted that other migrating birds not passing through the Horn of Africa arrived in Europe at the expected time.

- We have reconstructed 26 migration routes based on data from the small "data backpacks" weighing just 1 gram. This new technology provides us with a detailed picture of the birds' migration and stopovers. It is brand-new territory to be able to track animals this small over such great distances, says Associate Professor Kasper Thorup from the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate at the University of Copenhagen.

Delayed breeding

The birds' late arrival in 2011 also meant a similarly late breeding year.

- There are no signs of implications on the birds' breeding success and thereby the size of the population. But it is possible that we haven't yet seen the full effect of the delayed year, concludes Anders T?ttrup.

Japan minister's North Korea rocket gaffe spurs outcry

TOKYO: A Japanese government minister has come under fire from the opposition for saying North Korea should "waste no time" in holding its planned rocket launch so he can campaign in earnest for the upcoming election.

Pyongyang announced last week that it would launch a rocket - ostensibly aimed at placing a satellite in orbit - between December 10 and 22, prompting neighbouring countries to guard against a suspected long-range missile flight.

On a visit to his constituency in Osaka yesterday, chief cabinet secretary Osamu Fujimura said government duties were limiting his time to campaign as a candidate for the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), ahead of the general election on December 16.

Asked by reporters when he would come home again to put his campaign in full swing, he replied: "Basically, it depends on when the North Korean missile goes up. It will be great if they waste no time and send it up on Monday."

Opposition parties have taken advantage of his apparent gaffe to step up their attack on the centre-left party, widely criticized for being incompetent during its three years in power.

They demanded Fujimura's resignation, saying his duty was to help stop North Korea from launching a rocket.

"We cannot defend Japan with such a chief cabinet secretary. We aim to regain power," former prime minister Shinzo Abe, head of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, said today in a campaign speech in northern Japan.

While Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has been touring the country to boost the DPJ's chances in the uphill election battle, Fujimura has stayed in the capital to perform his role as the premier's right-hand man and chief spokesman.

Fujimura was quick to try and control the damage by saying later yesterday: "I want to apologise if a lack of explanation gave a false impression."

He said he had wanted to emphasise his wish to talk with people in his constituency in person and as much as possible.

Japan has ordered its military to shoot down a North Korean rocket if it threatens the nation's territory, readying surface-to-air missiles in Tokyo and Okinawa, and deploying Aegis warships in neighbouring waters.

Samsung promotes chairman's son to vice chairman

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co. promoted its chairman's only son to vice chairman, putting the 44-year-old closer to the top leadership position at the world's largest maker of memory chips, mobile phones and TVs.

Samsung, South Korea's largest industrial conglomerate, announced Jay Y. Lee's promotion to vice chairman just two years after he was named president. He assumes his new post Wednesday.

Samsung said in a statement that Lee, who was also chief operating officer, had contributed to the growth of its smartphone and TV businesses.

Lee, a graduate of Seoul National University of Korea and Keio University of Japan, is a grandson of Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull and the oldest child of current chairman Lee Kun-hee, South Korea's wealthiest man.

Lee's work has involved building Samsung's relationships with suppliers and other companies it does business with while his reclusive 70-year-old father focused on mapping out big picture strategy for the group.

The promotion was surprising because candidates in South Korea's Dec. 19 presidential election have been stepping up their pledges to curb the power of chaebol, the family-controlled conglomerates that operate a wide range of businesses from retailing to consumer electronics and heavy industries.

In South Korea, founding families of chaebol, such as Lee of Samsung and Chung of Hyundai, wield great power within their companies even though they hold only a minority stake in the group.

Some credit family ownership for enabling fast and bold decision making while others criticize conglomerates for putting too much emphasis on clan connections, stifling innovation and maximizing profit for the family rather than shareholders.

The promotion of the younger Lee comes as Samsung's chairman faces civil lawsuits filed by his older brother and two other family members who are claiming a bigger inheritance from the estate of the Samsung founder.

The inheritance battle might prevent Lee Kun-hee from transferring shareholdings that allow control over Samsung to his son. The first court ruling is expected next year.

The promotion of Lee was part of Samsung's annual executive reshuffle. Samsung also promoted vice presidents of mobile phone operations, Lee Don-joo and Hong Won-pyo, to presidents, recognizing the company's growth in smartphones with the Galaxy brand.

Having said my two cents on foolish government policy and the latest popular fad, I now return to what's really important this week: BEAT NAVY!

I keep receiving this article: ?West Point Hosts its 1st Same-Sex Wedding.?

Some of these senders are shocked friends who seek an explanation, others knowing my sensibilities send it deliberately to tweak me, still others send it in mockery. Here is my ?intuitively obvious? reply to all of you ?casual observers? out there.

Sadly, I am not shocked or surprised by this over-publicized event. It is a crude attempt at ?works justification? by certain self-important folks who are full of the newly created, government bestowed ?righteousness.? I fully expect that some may disagree with my explanation and think me to be a bigot, a throwback Neanderthal. But I frankly, I do not care what anyone thinks. Name-calling is typical of the Progressive reaction to principled disagreements. I quit playing that rigged game long ago. In the end, a person must answer only to God. And that includes Progressives who make up the rules of life as they go along Life, to them, is a personalized game of Trivial Pursuit or Monopoly.

Bottom Line: No more Alumni contributions are forthcoming from this ?Grey Hog? [nor, I imagine, from many thousands of other Alumni of that old and ?Long Grey Line?] until sanity returns to West Point.

This ?in your face? political event, supported by dubious DoD and the Academy Policy is a deliberate civil politicization of the Protestant Chapel at West Point in a vain and shallow attempt to curry public favor. If USMA wants to keep up insulting the conscience of orthodox Christian, Jewish, Mormon, Christian Orthodox, and other traditional religious believers, then they will see consequences. The Alumni and Friends of USMA Dollars will dry up significantly and all programs will suffer ... not to mention recruiting. USMA will still be my beloved alma mater, but in an odd twist of irony, it is she, rather than me, who has become the prodigal.

I recited the old form of this prayer publicly almost every week for four years in the West Point Protestant Chapel Service. Even though this prayer was long ago [but after my time there] altered of its original warrior masculinity in order to make it ?gender neutral,? it still speaks volumes. Reading this Prayer today makes me cry out, ?What are we doing? What have we done? Lord have mercy!?

I suppose that the ?Progressive Secularist-Christian,? who twists the Scripture and the Truth of Ages to suit their civil-political purposes can rationalize perfect agreement of their personal opinions with this prayer. What arrogance; what misapplied self-esteem; what humanist self-righteousness! Please, let us distinguish between a Christian Conscience and humanist opinion. On this point, a Small Catechism would be good for all of us. For me to agree with the Progressive humanist ?opinion? would be to abandon my ?conscience? which conforms to Sacred Scripture, its Moral Standards and Truth of Ages. Try as one might, one cannot alter the Scripture capriciously, as they have altered the Cadet Prayer. The only Conscience that counts in matters of Scripture belongs to God. God?s Conscience and Spirit invites our joy in conformity with Him. If Scripture is not seen as sacred by some [or the many] that is their problem and not mine. That the Progressives demand I accept their humanist explanations [they are always changing] of the Universe and forget God Word, is an abomination.

You see, it is not the Progressives who count, it is God who counts. I do not worship politics, or public opinion, or popular will. I worship God. This latest nonsense has gone way beyond the bounds of common sense and common decency. It makes a mockery of the Judeo-Christian traditions and beliefs. It is destroying ... intentionally ... Judeo-Christian tradition and reality in favor of an artificial world that is neither exceptional nor commendable.

Ever since I was admitted as a West Point New Cadet in July 1967, and up to this very day, I have often been called a ?spoony Grey Hog? [... old cadet slang for a serious, loyal and die-hard Army straight arrow]. I have always tried, but occasionally failed, to meet those exacting standards and I experienced the consequences. This made me try all the harder the next time. I have never deliberately and contemptuously lowered any bar to make things easier for myself. Why does West Point feel it necessary to accede to collectivist relativism and Alinsky-style activism of the political Left in order to shove the latest ?politically correct? conditioning down my throat. No thank you, I am not buying.

The French Revolution was unable to impose their inane, phony cultural calendar on the world for long. It was a bridge too far. The supercilious, libertine, and collectivist attitudes of Progressivism may hold sway for the moment, but not forever. Change may be slow, but sanity will return. This folly will eventually fall, just like all tyrannies before it because it has no legs ... it has no future.
