NEW YORK (AP) ? When a settlement ended the last legal fallout from the sexual assault allegation that sank his political career, Dominique Strauss-Kahn kept his distance.

The former International Monetary Fund leader, once seen as a promising French presidential candidate, stayed in Paris and stayed mum as a New York judge announced the settlement Monday.

But his accuser, hotel housekeeper Nafissatou Diallo, spoke out publicly in one of few times she has done so. Standing outside the courthouse, she thanked God and "everyone who supported me all over the world."

The lawsuit settlement ? its details sealed ? came after prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last year, saying Diallo had credibility problems. For her, the deal means she "can move on with her life," said one of her lawyers, Kenneth Thompson.

For Strauss-Kahn, it closes another of a number of sexual allegations that have confronted him since Diallo told police in May 2011 that he'd attacked her. He is still fighting charges of aggravated pimping in France.

In a statement, Strauss-Kahn attorneys William Taylor III and Amit Mehta said the former diplomat was "pleased to have arrived at a resolution" of the New York suit.

Longtime Strauss-Kahn friend and political ally Michele Sabban, vice president of the regional government around Paris, said Tuesday he was "relieved" over the agreement.

"Ever since May 15, 2011, this has been something that has weighed very heavily," said Sabban, who had a long-planned dinner Monday with Strauss-Kahn. "Now, he is turning to the future ... the page has turned."

Strauss-Kahn hadn't spoken with her about the size of the settlement and "he isn't supposed to," she said by phone, citing the confidentiality of the negotiations.

Diallo, a 33-year-old housekeeper from Guinea, told police Strauss-Kahn forced her to perform oral sex, tried to rape her and tore a ligament in her shoulder after she arrived to clean his luxury hotel suite. The 63-year-old Strauss-Kahn, who has since separated from his wife, has said what happened was "a moral failing" but was consensual.

The allegations spurred his arrest, forced him to resign his IMF post and cut off his potential candidacy for the French presidency.

The criminal case was dropped after prosecutors said they couldn't trust Diallo. Among their concerns: She was inconsistent about her actions right after leaving Strauss-Kahn's suite, and she lied about having been raped before.

She said she always told the truth about Strauss-Kahn and would press her claims in the lawsuit. Strauss-Kahn called the suit defamatory and countersued for $1 million.

Bronx state Supreme Court Justice Douglas McKeon said he met Diallo earlier this year and talked with her about the prospect of settlement talks. A final deal was inked just Monday, McKeon said. In an interview with French radio station RTL, he suggested that both sides wanted the terms of the deal to remain confidential.

The judge said Diallo also settled a separate libel lawsuit against the New York Post over a series of articles that claimed she was a prostitute; the details of that settlement also weren't disclosed. A spokeswoman for the News Corp.-owned newspaper didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

After Diallo came forward, other allegations emerged about Strauss-Kahn's behavior toward women. He had been known as a womanizer but largely viewed as debonair.

French judges are to decide by Dec. 19 whether to throw out the aggravated pimping charges, linked to a suspected prostitution ring run out of a luxury hotel in Lille. He acknowledges attending "libertine" gatherings but says he didn't know about any women getting paid to participate.

Another inquiry, centered on allegations of rape in a hotel in Washington, D.C., was dropped after French prosecutors said the accuser, an escort, changed her account to say she wasn't forced to have sex.

French prosecutors also have looked into writer Tristane Banon's allegations that Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her during a 2003 interview, a claim she made public after his New York arrest and he called imaginary and slanderous. Prosecutors said they believed the encounter qualified as a sexual assault, but the legal clock for pursuing her complaint had run out.

The Associated Press does not name people who report being sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Diallo and Banon have done.

Several hours before the New York court date, Strauss-Kahn was seen in Paris leaving his new residence in the Left Bank neighborhood of Montparnasse. Asked by the AP whether he was relieved the New York end of his legal problems would soon be over, he declined to respond.

A mix of disgust and apathy pervaded on Paris streets about the case.

"It's disgusting. He's disgusting. The money is disgusting," Parisian Carmen Letourner told the AP near Strauss-Kahn's residence. "He's a sex maniac."

Another Parisian, Jean-Marc Dicicco, expressed relief that the case would now be drifting out of the headlines: "I think that there are much more important events in life than this affair."

Unless?you?re dead set on a purchase you rarely buy a product or service the very first?time you encounter it, do you?

When people?first hit your website they?re most likely just poking around looking?for information. Once they?ve surveyed your site they?re going to move on. In?most cases never to return.

This is why it?s so important for you to have a decent?method of capturing their information.

This isn?t an RSS feed by the way. RSS does provide an effective way for people?to stay in touch with changes to your site, but it doesn?t get you their contact?information. Thus, it?s going to be hard to market to RSS subscribers in a direct?fashion.

With email marketing you?ll?set up a simple form on your site to get basic?information from your visitors.

The less you ask for the more likely you are to get it. I just ask for first name and email address.?Now you are going to want to make this very visible. I have looked at plenty of websites where the email sign-up form is buried.

Sometimes it?s not even on the home page! Big mistake.

I recommend you put it on the home page above the fold, which means?clearly?visible on the screen without scrolling. To make this effort even more effective,?offer some type of bonus to visitors.

It?s natural that now that we have a list built of people who want information?from us that we?d actually use it. Seems obvious but there are many who don?t.?Want to know a secret?

Go to the website of any social media guru you can think?of and I?ll bet they ask you for your name and email address?

Why do you think this is? I?ll tell you. It?s because email marketing still works to?make sales. Social media is a great tool but it doesn?t sell as well as email.?When?you?re reading an email you?re engrossed in that content for that moment in?time. This makes you an ideal prospect.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR EMAIL MARKETING MORE EFFECTIVE

They key to making email effective is to honor the deal you made with the person?who joined your list.?If you told them you?d email coupons, then by golly do that.?If you promised helpful articles, then they?d better solve problems by reading?your newsletter.

Lastly, if you told them you?d email them once a week, then?don?t fail to do so.

Email marketing works when you give the value recipients expect when they?expect it.?Stray from this formula and you?ll see unsatisfying results.

Who's living past 100 in the U.S.? Mostly white women

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Women have long been known to live longer than men, but when it comes to hitting the century mark the difference is stark: just 2 out of 10 Americans who live to 100 or longer are male.

Of the 53,364 Americans age 100 and older, more than 80 percent are women, a U.S. Census Bureau report released on Monday showed.

The agency's findings, based on data collected from its 2010 census, also found those who make it past 100 are also more likely to be white city-dwellers in the Northeast and Midwest.

"Due to sex differences in mortality over the lifespan, the proportion of females in the population increases with age. This is especially true in the oldest ages, where the percentage female increases sharply," Census researchers wrote.

"For every 100 centenarian females, there were only 20.7 centenarian males," they added.

While reaching 100 years of age may not attract as much fanfare as it did a few decades ago, the public still marvels at those who reach "super centenarian," status.

Guinness World Records, which certifies the oldest living person, said the title was held by Besse Cooper, an American woman who died last week at age 116 in a Georgia nursing home soon after having her hair done.

Guinness announced on its website that the new person to certified to be the oldest anywhere on the globe is 115-year-old Dina Manfredini, an immigrant from Pievepelago, Italy, who has lived in Des Moines, Iowa, since 1920. She is just 15 days older than Japan's Jiroemon Kimura, Guinness World Records said.

Although still rare, the number of people living past 100 can have an impact as policymakers consider and plan services and programs that affect older adults, Census said in its report.

The findings are not necessarily all rosy for women.

Living longer can mean greater medical and retirement expenses, among other issues.

And the number of those living past 100 continues to grow. Just 32,194 Americans reached 100 or older in 1980, far below the current level, according to the Census Bureau.

Still, centenarians in the United States remain relatively rare compared to those in other developed countries.

There were 1.73 centenarians per 10,000 people in the United States in 2010 compared to 1.92 per 10,000 people in Sweden, 2.70 per 10,000 in France and 3.43 per 10,000 people in Japan, Census said.

Online auction site fails to take off - Stuff

Temuka's Daniel Manson envisioned he would be the owner of a successful business when he bought an auction website, AuctionMe, in 2004, but it remains static.

He faces competition with a recently launched local site Bananas4free which has high hopes of cornering the market with not only online auction but classified advertising and social networking.

But Mr Manson said he was not concerned. "I haven't given it much thought."

Mr Manson was working at Fonterra until 2006 when he took voluntary redundancy and looked for further investment. "It seemed like an opportunity for a good business," he said.

But when he was approached about a $25,000 advertising package to launch the site in the public arena Mr Manson got cold feet and instead bought a taxi company. "The taxi business is more reliable." Perhaps as a result of this decision the site has not grown, there has only been "a wee bit of traffic" since.

"I had planned to take on Trade Me."

His original strategy was to build up regular Temuka customers and then to branch out into other districts.

There were only a few other auction sites when he started and he hoped word of mouth would be his best promotion.

It is completely free to users, Mr Manson pays to host the site and use software naming rights.

Unfortunately his enthusiasm has waned as the numbers continue to remain small.

"I've thought about selling it." He is in two minds as what to do for the best to make a profit he needs volume, but he hasn't lost all hope yet.

"If by a miracle 100,000 people start using it I'll go from there."

Proposed Acquisition of Nexen Inc. by CNOOC Limited Receives Industry Canada Approval

CALGARY, Dec. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Nexen Inc. (TSX: NXY) (NYSE: NXY) announced today that under the terms of the Investment Canada Act, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, has approved the proposed acquisition of Nexen by CNOOC Limited (CNOOC). No further approvals are required in Canada.

"This is an important milestone in the process and confirms our belief that this transaction provides a number of significant benefits to Canada and to Nexen," said Kevin Reinhart, Nexen's interim President and CEO. "We remain focused on working with CNOOC to bring this transaction to a close."

The closing of the acquisition remains subject to the receipt of applicable government and regulatory approvals, and the satisfaction or waiver of the other customary closing conditions.
