MANAMA, Bahrain ? A senior Shiite cleric in Bahrain says the harsh crackdown on anti-government protests by security forces has not silenced people demanding greater rights in the Gulf kingdom.
Sheik Isa Qassim says the "politics of fear" and the Sunni rulers' refusal to reform has strengthened the resolve of Bahrain's Shiite majority.
More than 30 people have died since February when protests inspired by other Arab uprisings began in Bahrain.
Hundreds of activists have been detained and tried on anti-state crimes in a special security court. Thousands of Shiite professionals have been fired from jobs for protesting.
Bahrain lifted emergency rule in June. Since then, government opponents have clashed with police almost every night.
