AROUND 10am, the rain began to fall. It wasn't especially heavy, but it was relentless. Hour after hour the downpour continued, soaking into the deep black soil. After midnight, the hill was saturated, and the water began to pool on the surface and run, carving a gully that deepened and flared as the rain continued.

A few weeks later, I am standing beneath that hill. Overhead, the sun shines in through a latticework of white metal bars. In front of me is the slush of black mud that washed onto the concrete floor, much to the consternation of the rain-makers. They hadn't meant to carve out a chunk of the hillside ? after all, they had only just built it.

Once, the giant glass chamber in which ...

Wall St. dips on caution before Fed debates stimulus policy

By Alison Griswold

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Monday as investor sentiment turned wary before a Federal Reserve meeting later this week that could signal when the Fed will begin to temper its ultra accomodative policy.

In addition, a data-packed week that includes July's payrolls report on Friday could sway the market.

Stocks dipped broadly, with all three major indexes moving lower and eight of the 10 S&P 500 sectors declining. Energy and financials were weakest, with losses around 1 percent.

Investors speculated about a statement to come on Wednesday at the end of a two-day meeting of the Fed's Open Market Committee. The statement will be scrutinized for hints on when the central bank may begin to scale back its massive bond-buying aimed at stimulating the economy and known as quantitative easing.

September is the most likely time for the Fed to begin paring its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, according to a July 22 Reuters poll of economists.

"I think today we saw some better-than-expected economic data in Europe and here, and that's got people concerned that we are going to see a withdrawal of QE," said Stephen Massocca, managing director at Wedbush Equity Management LLC in San Francisco.

"There's a concern that whatever the FOMC says or does will lead to a dramatic reaction in the market, much like we saw in June."

Until recently, investors have interpreted average or weak economic data as a sign the Fed will continue to stimulate the economy and put a floor on stock prices. However, the prospect of a slightly less accommodative Fed in the near future has meant signs of a stronger economy have become more important to the market.

Contracts to purchase previously owned U.S. homes fell in June, retreating from a more than six-year high touched in May as rising mortgage rates were starting to dampen home sales.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average <.dji> was down 64.15 points, or 0.41 percent, at 15,494.68. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> fell 8.41 points, or 0.50 percent, at 1,683.24, and the Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> lost 17.67 points, or 0.49 percent, at 3,595.49.

In the latest earnings, Loews Corp , the hotel, energy and financial services conglomerate, posted a jump in second-quarter profit as revenue from its insurance arm, CNA Financial , increased nearly 13 percent. Shares of Loews edged down 0.6 percent to $45.78.

Halfway through earnings season, 67.2 percent of S&P 500 companies have beaten analysts' expectations - in line with the 67 percent average beat over the last four quarters. About 56 percent of the companies have beaten revenue expectations, more than the 48 percent of revenue beats in the past four earnings seasons but below the historical average.

Merger activity could give equities support as big deals show that large investors see value in the market.

On Monday, U.S. drugmaker Perrigo agreed to buy Irish drug company Elan for $8.6 billion. U.S.-traded Elan shares rose 5.2 percent to $15.71. Perrigo was the S&P 500's worst performer after the news, shedding 6.7 percent to $125.22.

Shares in advertising groups jumped after Publicis and Omnicom said they would merge. Investors bet the deal would create an opening for rivals to poach defecting clients and potentially trigger more deals.

Omnicom shares gained 0.6 percent to $65.48 and smaller rival Interpublic Group gained 3.9 percent to $16.49.

"M&A deals are typically financed with debt, and if you're looking at an environment where the interest rates are going to go up, that would be an incentive to get moving," Massocca said.

"I don't think interest rates are going to go any lower."

Hudson's Bay Co , operator of department store chains Lord & Taylor in the United States and The Bay in Canada, said it would buy luxury retailer Saks Inc for $16 per share. Saks shares rose 3.6 percent to $15.86, while Hudson's Bay added 1.1 percent to $17.60.

Data on the housing and industrial sectors are scheduled in the first half of the week, followed by gross domestic product for the second quarter on Wednesday and the payrolls report on Friday.

Instagram is very determined to keep Windows Phone users away

Instagram Windows Phone Pictures DeletedInstagram Windows Phone Pictures Deleted

It seems that Facebook really doesn?t want Windows Phone users uploading photos onto Instagram. The Verge reports that Facebook seems to be deleting all Instagram photos uploaded through Instance, a third-party app that lets Windows Phone users put their pictures on the popular photo-sharing network. Although Instance users can upload their pictures to Instagram, The Verge says that ?after just seconds, the photos disappear from an Instagram account and the URLs to access them no longer work.? Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom recently said that Instagram wouldn?t be coming to Windows Phone or BlackBerry ?anytime soon? and the company appears very determined to keep unauthorized platforms from enjoying its services.

GoPro App 2.0 lets action cam owners save and share their footage

GoPro App 2 lets action cam owners save and share their media

Since launch, the GoPro App has primarily served as a remote control; it hasn't been much good for reviewing the day's shooting. That won't be an issue with the newly launched GoPro App 2.0. Both Android and iOS users can now browse their action camera's memory card, save and play media on a mobile device, and share any saved clips through email, MMS and social networks like Instagram. Windows Phone users aren't in line for the update right now, but their Android and iOS counterparts can grab both the new app and corresponding camera firmware upgrades at the source links.

(AP) ? The Texas Rangers say they're investigating a claim by pitcher Tanner Scheppers that he was attacked in downtown Cleveland last week.

Scheppers said he was "sucker-punched by several young males" while going out to dinner a few blocks from the team's hotel Thursday night. He sustained facial cuts and bruises, and said his attackers ran away.

Cleveland-based entertainment website Scene reported Sunday that Scheppers verbally instigated the incident. The website cited a witness without giving the person's name.

The Cleveland Police Department said Sunday that Scheppers was involved in a physical altercation at 2:30 a.m. Friday. The statement said Scheppers "refused to provide information and refused to make a police report."

Scheppers pitched a scoreless inning in Sunday's 6-0 loss to the Indians, his first work since the altercation.

Approached by reporters following the game, Scheppers tersely said, "I already told you guys everything. I don't have any more to say about it. A lot of what's out there is lies."

The Rangers issued a statement that said they had been in contact with Cleveland police and the Indians.

"Until our investigation is complete, no one from the organization will have any further comment on this matter," the team said.

Scheppers first addressed the incident before Saturday night's game. The Rangers arrived in Cleveland on Thursday night following their afternoon game in Texas.

The 26-year-old Scheppers said he was knocked to the sidewalk, but never lost consciousness. He said he had a headache at the time but didn't sustain a concussion.

Scheppers, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 200 pounds, said police were called but no report was filed. The team informed Major League Baseball security.

"They (the police) said it happens a lot, actually," Scheppers said then. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The police statement Sunday said officers called for EMS help at the scene and Scheppers "refused medical attention." Police said officers took Scheppers and another unidentified man back to the team hotel.

Wis. air show leads fight against federal fees

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? One of the nation's largest air shows begins Monday in Wisconsin, and for the first time, the federal government is charging it an air traffic control fee that amounts to about $45 for each of the 10,000 planes flying in.

The fee has angered pilots, who already pay for air traffic control through a fuel tax, and aviation enthusiasts, who say air shows have been disproportionately hurt by the automatic federal budget cuts that went into effect earlier this spring.

AirVenture, which draws hundreds of thousands of people each year, has not paid for air traffic control before. The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Experimental Aircraft Association, which paid the $447,000 fee to the Federal Aviation Administration but has petitioned for a refund in federal court. Air show organizers nationwide are watching the fight under the assumption that if EAA loses, they too could soon be asked to pay.

"It will be another blow to an industry that can't sustain that kind of problem right now," said John Cudahy, president of the International Council of Air Shows, which represents hundreds of events.

Dozens of air shows were canceled earlier this year after the military grounded its jet and demonstration teams because of the budget cuts. The teams draw big crowds, and organizers of some shows felt they wouldn't be able to bring in enough people without them. Some shows that did go on, such as the Vectren Dayton Air Show in Ohio, saw attendance drop two-thirds or more.

AirVenture is among a handful of air shows being charged this year for air traffic control. Most include fly-ins, in which pilots arrive in their own planes, and have heavier air traffic than shows where people come by car or public transportation. A small fly-in could involve 100 or so pilots gathering at an airport for a pancake breakfast. Large ones, like AirVenture, involve thousands of planes coming and going over a week.

The FAA plans to provide 87 air traffic controllers and supervisors for AirVenture. Spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the automatic federal budget cuts forced it to seek payment for the cost. The agency said previously it had to cut $384 million from its budget by Sept. 30.

John Leenhouts, president and CEO of Sun 'n Fun Inc. in Lakeland, Fla., said it received notice about three weeks before its April event that it would have to pay more than $200,000 for air traffic control services. By that time, Sun 'n Fun and its partner organizations ? including aircraft, engine and aviation equipment manufacturers ? had invested about $4 million in the event.

"So there's no turning it off, you have to do it," said Leenhouts, a former Navy pilot.

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association donated $125,000 in recognition of the event's $55 million impact on the state economy, he said. But Sun 'n Fun, a nonprofit focused on aviation education, is still struggling to pay the rest of the tab.

"We cannot do scholarships or even put together some programs for kids to learn to fly," Leenhouts said.

EAA officials fear they will be in a similar position. Like Sun 'n Fun, AirVenture is a fundraiser for aviation education programs, and EAA board chairman Jack Pelton said the unexpected 7 percent increase in costs means less will be left for those charitable efforts.

It is a particularly bitter pill because the federal budget that went into effect Oct. 1 included money for air traffic control for major aviation events, as did previous budgets, said Pelton, a private pilot and former CEO of Cessna Aircraft Co. Air traffic control is funded partly by Congress and partly with a fuel tax paid by pilots. Many fliers now feel they are being taxed twice.

Dick Knapinski, a private pilot and spokesman for EAA, called it an "ominous precedent."

"Congress sets the appropriations and tells the agencies how to operate their budget, but the FAA has gone around that process without any congressional approval or public input," he said.

EAA has received support from a bipartisan group of 28 senators, including the two from Wisconsin, Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat Tammy Baldwin, and Oklahoma Republican James Inhofe, a pilot and longtime AirVenture participant. They asked FAA administrator Michael Huerta in a June 6 letter to reconsider charging AirVenture, saying air traffic services are already covered by the aviation fuel tax.

Wisconsin Rep. Tom Petri, a Republican whose district includes Oshkosh, where AirVenture is held, also has been lobbying the FAA to reconsider the fee. He faulted the agency for charging AirVenture when it could have made other cuts.

But while lawmakers criticized the FAA, others blamed them. Petri, Johnson and 16 of the other senators voted for the budget authorizing the automatic cuts.

"It's very unfortunate that the inability of the federal government to do their job and create a working, functioning budget has to be forced down on the general public to suffer the consequences of their poor efforts," Leenhouts said.

Inhofe voted against the bill because of concerns about how the across-the-board nature of the cuts would affect the military and FAA, his office said. Baldwin had not yet been elected.

EAA has paid its fee under protest and filed an appeal in federal court, but Pelton acknowledged it could be months, if not years, before the matter is resolved. Meanwhile, both AirVenture and Sun 'n Fun have started looking at ways to reduce air traffic costs next year.

"The Wolverine," starring Hugh Jackman as Marvel Comics' sharp- clawed superhero, slashed its way to $55 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales to claim the box office crown in a summer that hasn't been kind to some other big-budget action films.

"The Conjuring," the low-budget horror film that led last weekend's box office, slipped to second place with $22.1 million in domestic sales from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The film has generated nearly $84 million in overall ticket sales, a surprisingly strong showing for a film that cost just under $20 million to make.

The animated film "Despicable Me 2," featuring the voice of comic actor Steve Carell, finished third with $16 million in ticket sales in its fourth week in movie theaters. The film was made by Universal Pictures and has collected more than $660 million in ticket sales around the world.

Animated film "Turbo," about a super-speedy snail with dreams of racing in the Indy 500, took the No. 4 slot with sales of $13.3 million. Ryan Reynolds provides the voice for the title character in the film produced by "Shrek" creator DreamWorks Animation.

"The Wolverine" fell short of Hollywood insiders' $72 million weekend estimates, the latest in a string of big-budget action films that failed to meet expectations, though it performed strongly overseas.

In recent weeks "R.I.P.D.," "Pacific Rim," "The Lone Ranger," and "White House Down" all fizzled at the box office.

"We're incredibly happy with this result," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, which distributed "The Wolverine."

"It's good news on a global scale, and this is a global business," Aronson said. The film took in more than $86 million internationally, for a total worldwide gross of $141 million.

"The Wolverine," which cost an estimated $120 million to make, stars Jackman in his sixth film as the ageless mutant, which is also featured in the "X-Men" movies. Those six films have generated $1.9 billion in worldwide ticket sales, according to the movie site Box Office Mojo.

The latest chapter was the lowest opening film in the "X-Men" franchise since the first film opened with $54.5 million in 2000, and fell far short of the $85 million take for the first Wolverine film, 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Reviews were mixed to solid on "Wolverine," with a 68 percent positive rating on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes and the film received an A-minus CinemaScore rating based on moviegoers' input. Ticket site Fandango said the film grabbed 51 percent of advance sales, with 73 percent saying they would not want to see the film without Jackman in the lead role.

Aronson also pointed to the importance of the star as a huge draw at the worldwide box office. "We're going to be phenomenally successful at the end of the day," he said.

In limited release, comedy "The To Do List" earned just over $1.5 million from 591 theaters, close to its $1.5 million production cost. The movie stars Aubrey Plaza from NBC TV's "Parks & Recreation" as a high-school graduate who wants to lose her virginity before she heads to college.

"The Wolverine" was made by 20th Century Fox, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox, which also distributed "Turbo." "The Conjuring" was released by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc. Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Despicable Me 2." "The To Do List" was distributed by CBS Films, a unit of CBS Corp.

Key events in Egypt's uprising and unrest

CAIRO - Millions of people poured into Egypt's streets Friday in rival rallies while the nation's ousted president was formally placed under investigation on a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Here are some key events from more than two years of turmoil and transition in Egypt:

Jan. 25-Feb. 11, 2011 ? Egyptians stage nationwide demonstrations against the rule of President Hosni Mubarak. Hundreds of protesters are killed as Mubarak and his allies try to crush the uprising.

Feb. 11 ? Mubarak steps down and turns power over to the military. The military dissolves parliament and suspends the constitution, meeting two key demands of protesters.

Nov. 28, 2011-Feb 15, 2012 ? Egypt holds multistage, weekslong parliamentary elections. In the lawmaking lower house, the Muslim Brotherhood wins nearly half the seats, and ultraconservative Salafis take another quarter. The remainder goes to liberal, independent and secular politicians. In the largely powerless upper house, Islamists take nearly 90 per cent of the seats.

May 23-24, 2012 ? The first round of voting in presidential elections has a field of 13 candidates. Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister under Mubarak, emerge as the top two finishers, to face each other in a runoff.

June 14 ? The Supreme constitutional Court orders the dissolving of the lower house of parliament.

June 16-17 ? Egyptians vote in the presidential runoff between Morsi and Shafiq. Morsi wins with 51.7 per cent of the vote.

June 30 ? Morsi takes his oath of office.

Nov. 19 ? Members of liberal parties and representatives of Egypt's churches withdraw from the 100-member assembly writing the constitution, protesting attempts by Islamists to impose their will.

Nov. 22 ? Morsi unilaterally decrees greater powers for himself, giving his decisions immunity from judicial review and barring the courts from dissolving the constituent assembly and the upper house of parliament. The move sparks days of protests.

Nov. 30 ?Islamists in the constituent assembly rush to complete the draft of the constitution. Morsi sets a Dec. 15 date for a referendum.

Dec. 4 ? More than 100,000 protesters march on the presidential palace, demanding the cancellation of the referendum and the writing of a new constitution. The next day, Islamists attack an anti-Morsi sit-in, sparking street battles that leave at least 10 dead.

Dec. 15, Dec. 22 ? In the two-round referendum, Egyptians approve the constitution, with 63.8 per cent voting in favour. Turnout is low.

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Hundreds of thousands hold protests against Morsi on the 2-year anniversary of the start of the revolt against Mubarak, and clashes erupt in many places.

Feb.-March 2013 ? Protests rage in Port Said and other cities for weeks, with dozens more dying in clashes.

April 7 ? A Muslim mob attacks the main cathedral of the Coptic Orthodox Church as Christians hold a funeral and protest there over four Christians killed in sectarian violence the day before. Pope Tawadros II publicly blames Morsi for failing to protect the building.

June 23 ? A mob beats to death four Egyptian Shiites in a village on the outskirts of Cairo.

June 30 ? Millions of Egyptians demonstrate, calling for Morsi to step down. Eight people are killed in clashes outside the Muslim Brotherhood's Cairo headquarters.

July 1 ? Huge demonstrations continue, and Egypt's powerful military gives the president and the opposition 48 hours to resolve their disputes, or it will impose its own solution.

July 2 ? Military officials disclose main details of the army's plan if no agreement is reached: replacing Morsi with an interim administration, cancelling the Islamist-based constitution and calling elections in a year. Morsi delivers a late-night speech in which he pledges to defend his legitimacy and vows not to step down.

July 3 ? Egypt's military chief announces that Morsi has been deposed, to be replaced by the Chief Justice of the Supreme constitutional Court until new presidential elections. No time frame is given. Muslim Brotherhood leaders are arrested.

July 4 ? Supreme constitutional Court Chief Justice Adly Mansour is sworn in as Egypt's interim president.

July 5 ? Mansour dissolves the Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament as Morsi's supporters stage mass protests demanding his return. Clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi groups in Cairo and Alexandria, and violence elsewhere leave at least 36 dead. A Brotherhood strongman, deputy head Khairat el-Shater, is arrested.

July 8 ? Egyptian soldiers open fire on Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators in front of a military base in Cairo, killing more than 50. Each side blames the other for starting the clash. The Brotherhood calls for an uprising against the military. Mansour puts forward a time line for amending the constitution and electing a new president and parliament by mid-February. The Brotherhood refuses to participate in the process.

July 9 ? Mansour appoints economist Hazem el-Beblawi as prime minister and opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei as vice-president. A military announcement backs up the appointments.

July 26 ? Millions pour into the streets of Egypt in rival demonstrations after a call by the country's military chief for protesters to give him a mandate to stop "potential terrorism" by supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood. Five people are killed in clashes. Prosecutors announce Morsi is under investigation for a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

As Chinese cut spending, Hong Kong turns to India for tourists

HONG KONG - Even though youngsters in Hong Kong are grumbling about tough times on the job front, the upmarket image of the city is amply evident. Men are smartly dressed, women extremely chic and well groomed, and if you are a female tourist, you cannot miss the beautiful and classy handbags they carry and the pretty shoes they wear.

But times are indeed difficult and while Hong Kong people are reining in their shopping a bit, the upscale Hong Kong malls are kept in business by visitors from mainland China.

Whether it is tourist attractions like the Ocean Park spread over a massive 91.5 hectares of land, the Sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck inside the International Commerce Centre ? the city?s tallest building with 118 floors ? that gives a spectacular view, or the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, there is a huge presence of visitors from China.

Fast transport between Hong Kong and several Chinese border cities is facilitating smooth movement of people. Every 10 minutes there is a train connection between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, which you can reach in less than an hour. Other cities like Guangzhou are well connected too. Alice Chu from the Hong Kong Tourist Board points out that when the hi-speed train link with China is operational by 2016, travel between Hong Kong and Shanghai will take 24 hours and to Beijing 28 hours.

Small wonder then that the Chinese are thronging to Hong Kong not only for luxury goods, but also weekly grocery. The absence of sales tax makes it worth the trouble. The Louis Vuitton and Prada enthusiasts can be sure that they will take home only genuine products ? the mainland in infested with a plethora of imitations ? because strict Hong Kong laws ensure the closure of shops that sell fake goods.

Alice says that many Chinese mothers prefer to buy infant milk powder and other baby food items from this city. And during the mid-autumn festival in September when the Chinese devour Mooncake pastries made with sweet lotus paste, many buy it from Hong Kong ?because here there are many innovations with the recipe. We are essentially a mixture of the East and the West and our pastries have the European, Japanese and other influences. And, because it is quite fattening, our bakeries do healthier versions of it too,? she adds.

      To Indians? taste

Hong Kong prides itself on being a melting pot of various cultures; from Filipino maids to British investment bankers, it has a huge population of expats. Like all other countries, Hong Kong too is looking for Indian tourists who have started to flock in.

With sightseeing and shopping, not to miss experimenting with different cuisines being a new passion of young Indians, Hong Kong has a lot of excitement to offer the ubiquitous Indian traveller. We were given a taste of cuisines ranging from Chinese to Italian and some of it was exceptionally good.

This is an expensive city and while for a little less than $100 you can get a comfortable room in an Ibis hotel, it does give you choice of both inexpensive street food and shopping from tiny shops on narrow streets. If you have the time and the stomach, you can bargain your way to take home some pretty great stuff.

But above all, it is a safe city; at no time you feel somebody lurking dangerously close to your handbag, and that is a relief by itself!

'Sister Wives' daughter wants a plural marriage

      TV

"Sister Wives" patriarch Kody Brown recently told TODAY.com that he realizes that plural marriage isn't for everyone ? and that it might not even be right for all of his kids.

"We are not pushing it on other people," he said. "We don?t even push it on our children."

Still, at least one of the family's 17 children has embraced the lifestyle. Mariah's decision to one day follow that particular tenet of their fundamentalist Mormon faith is part of the focus of the next episode of the TLC series.

"Kody's always said that you should not live plural marriage unless you feel the call to it ? you don't just do it just to try it out," first wife Meri, Mariah's mother, explained in sneak peek exclusive to TODAY.com. "I completely agree with him on that. And I think that Mariah has had that calling. She just feels that."

But Mariah wants to make sure no one is confused about what that calling means to her.

"There's a stereotype that polygamous women don't go to college and don't get an education," the 17-year-old said in the clip. "That's not me, because I want an education and I want to become a doctor ? but I also want to live plural marriage."

Mariah's sister Mykelti (daughter of Kody and his third wife, Christine) imagines that Mariah will eventually have "four wives and 23 children." Another sister (Aspyn, Christine's oldest child) seemed taken aback by the thought of Mariah having so many kids, but for Madison (Kody's oldest daughter with second wife, Janelle), the problem had more to do with the number of wives.

      "Four?!" she exclaimed.

Of course, it's no surprised that would be a sticking point for Madison. Last season, she made it clear that plural marriage wasn't for her.

"I would not be able to share my husband like that," she insisted.

See what else Kody's kids have to say about the subject when "Sister Wives" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on TLC.
