Decisions To Make When Choosing A Business Partner

?

The world of sales is a place where one's path can intersect with that of a competitor or fellow representative many times. While competition between companies is a good thing, certain situations may call for a business to team up with fellow salespeople.

A sales management team needs to know the correct situations for partnering up with another company, along with determining what type of relationship to pursue.

The manager at a sales office should find a partner that would ideally be in a complementary business, which could mean that if they sell a product, your company should sell the service, according to Heather Kivett, President of Resolution Systems, Inc., a sales training and consulting firm.

"You don?t want to have a competitive situation when you?re in front of a potential customer with a partner," said the executive. "You should both have a reason to be there."

There needs to be a relationship where a management team can easily find out how to build greater value between the two companies by joining forces, rather than approaching the potential customer separately. Two representatives may be stronger than one, but there needs to be an alignment with products and services so that a more complete and bundled package can be offered to the buyer, according to Kivett.

By partnering with another company you are also expanding your knowledge base, as the new business relationship may open doors and reveal information that was not previously available, said the executive.

"You?re providing your partner knowledge and vice versa," noted Kivett. "The result when you are in front of a prospect is a more comprehensive presentation where you?re able to answer all of their questions, by drawing from that expanded knowledge base."

As with any business relationship, it is important for a sales management team to define the roles that exist. The individuals need to have specific strengths, ideally those that do not exist within your business, and these need to be understood and leveraged by both sides, noted the executive.

"This way no one else is stepping on someone else?s toes and the partnership is seamless to the customer," said Kivett.

You can also leverage each other?s customer bases, a tactic that benefits both sides if there are similar numbers and revenue streams.

"Whether you need a reference to close a sale or are in the prospecting phase, by partnering with another organization of similar size you?ve essentially doubled the number of customers to mine," said Kivett.

The relationship between work and study should not be underestimated. It is important that youngsters in general, and teenagers in particular, get real life experience of what it takes to succeed in the 'real world', what it takes to make money, and how hard dad or mum have to work to earn those extra few cents.

China official tells Web firms to control content (AP)

BEIJING ? A Communist Party leader has told China's Internet companies to tighten control over material online as Beijing cracks down on dissent and tries to block the rise of Middle East-style protests.

The party secretary for Beijing, Liu Qi, issued the warning following a visit this week to Sina Corp., which operates a popular microblogging site, according to the party-published newspaper Beijing Daily.

Internet companies should "strengthen management and firmly prevent the spread of fake and harmful information," Liu was quoted as saying after the visit Monday to Sina. He said companies should "resist fake and negative information."

Communist authorities encourage Internet use for education and business but are uneasy about its potential to spread dissent, especially after social networking and other websites played a key role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

Beijing is in the midst of one of its most sweeping crackdowns on dissent in years and has detained or questioned hundreds of activists, lawyers and others.

The government tries to block access to foreign websites deemed subversive and Chinese operators of websites where the public can post comments are required to watch the material and remove any that violates censorship rules.

The government's censorship rules prompted Google Inc. to close its China search engine last year. Mainland users can see Google's Chinese-language search site in Hong Kong but access is slower and the company's China market share has shrunk.

The report on Liu's warning gave no details of how Internet companies were expected to change their management.

Employees who answered the phone at Sina referred questions to a spokeswoman who did not answer her phone.

With Liu during the visit were Sina CEO Charles Chao and Kai-fu Lee, a former boss of Google's China unit who runs a technology investment company, according to the Beijing Daily.

Chao told Forbes magazine in March that Sina's microblogging site, Weibo, has at least 100 employees monitoring content 24 hours a day. The company said in May that the number of Weibo users had passed 140 million.

Also this week, the Beijing Internet Media Association, a government-sanctioned industry group, called on its 104 member companies to police Internet content, possibly prompted by Liu's order.

"Propaganda guidance to the public should be led toward a correct direction," the appeal said, according to the Beijing Daily. "Online news should be trustworthy and should not spread rumors or vulgar contents."

Liu, the party secretary, also visited the headquarters of Youku.com Inc., a video portal, and talked with CEO Victor Koo, the report said.

China has the world's biggest online population, with 485 million Internet users as of June 30, according to the government-sanctioned China National Internet Information Center.

Meanwhile, a major Chinese Internet commerce platform, Taobao, has told merchants that use its service to stop selling virtual private network and other software that allows Web surfers to avoid government filters.

Taobao, part of Alibaba Group, said it acted after finding VPNs were being used to visit foreign websites illegally. A company spokesman said Tuesday it took the action on its own without receiving government orders.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry big winners at VMAs

Pop star Lady Gaga picked up two awards and Katy Perry won three, including video of the year. But it was Beyonce showing off her new baby bump that stole the show at MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday.

The MTV VMAs annually turn up the volume on surprises and outrageous acts by the world's top singers and bands. Last year it was Lady Gaga's meat dress and the year before the Kanye West and Taylor Swift speech mishap. But nobody saw Beyonce's pregnancy coming -- except her husband Jay-Z.

Beyonce, whose hits include "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," first appeared on the red carpet, posed for photographers and used her arms to outline the baby bump under her long gown.

In the audience, Jay-Z was congratulated by Kanye West and he gave Beyonce a big wave. On Twitter, one ardent fan had already started an account, http://twitter.com/#/BeyJayFetus, and it had more than 900 followers.

Lady Gaga opened the VMAs singing her song "You and I" and dressed in drag as her male alter ego, Joe Calderone. She stayed in the fictional character throughout the program and accepted awards for best female video and best message video for her song, "Born This Way."

"I feel so blessed to be here," Lady Gaga said onstage, holding the MTV moonman statuette for best female performer. "It doesn't matter how you are -- gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgendered -- you were born this way."

The other big winner of the night was Katy Perry. who took home video of the year, the night's top prize, with her triumphant song and video for "Firework."

She also picked up best collaboration for "E.T." featuring Kanye West, and a minor trophy for special effects with "E.T."

Perry, who is known for cute and colorful costumes, accepted her award with a cube-shaped hat on her head.

"I'm very proud of the song," she said. "I feel like I am doing something right when I sing (it)."

Justin Bieber won for best male video with "U Smile," and Tyler, The Creator took home the MTV moonman for best new artist with "Yonkers."

Britney Spears earned the honor of having the best pop video with "Till the World Ends." She was also given the special honor of the Michael Jackson video vanguard award.

Foo Fighters nabbed best rock video and Nicki Minaj, in a bright dress she said was inspired by Tokyo and its Harajuku district, took best hip-hop video for "Super Bass."

Shut out of the top awards was British singer Adele, who has been topping charts for weeks with her hit album "21" and its singles including "Rolling in the Deep." But "Rolling" did manage to earn awards in minor categories of art direction, cinematography, and editing.

Highlights included a duet by Jay-Z and Kanye West, singing a song from their new album, "Watch the Throne," and Lil Wayne closed the program in advance of his new album's release.

Legendary soul singer Tony Bennett and pop star Bruno Mars took part in a tribute to the late soul singer Amy Winehouse, who recently died. Bennett said some people just have talent and others don't.

Internet Business Outsourcing ? The Best Ways to Manage Your ...

When you outsource projects and functions for your web business, you?ll need a technique to manage your contractors that won?t end up making outsourcing more work for you than it should be. Outsourcing should take lots of work off your plate and put it on some else?s, so that you can have room to do the things you like to do or the things which make you more money. The way to be sure that you manage your team the best that you can is to look at either hiring an internet business manager, or you may wish to purchase a project manager?s system (software) or both.

Project Manager?s System

A project manager?s system will help you manage one to a complete team of contractors that you outsource to by organizing activities and jobs in a way that your team can simply understand and you can keep organized. There are many different project management systems you can use both free and for a cost. A couple good project management systems are CentralDesktop.com, and Basecamp.com. You can also use a file sharing system like Google Docs or Dropbox.com to share soundly varied files and info between you and your contractors.

Contract with an Internet Business Manager

Another alternative is to contract with a web business administrator. An internet business boss or a project boss is a someone, maybe a firm, that handles all sides of your business on an independent contract basis. Your web business executive, or project boss, will manage your entire team of contractors for you so you only communicate with him and not 10 different individuals. You tell the manager what needs to be done and he will assign the project to the correct team member, keep an eye fixed on your outsourcing budget and ensure everything is done on time to your standards before you accept it. In this case, you will still likely require to have some type of project managing system (software) if your online business administrator doesn?t already have one that?s secure that they can use.

Use A Cloud

Most project management systems or software is ran ?in the cloud? which is really handy for outsourcing since you and your contractors can be at any location with Net access to see the projects, due dates, time kept and that kind of thing. Using one of these systems, whether or not you hire an internet business or project administrator will greatly raise your proficiency within your business. The cool thing about the pro paid versions is that your helpers and contractors can watch the internet help files and videos to discover how to employ the system so that leaves virtually no coaching in your hands other than to direct them to the applicable online info if asked.

By implementing one of these solutions you will essentially gain more control over your business and the profitability of your business because you?ll have everything in place to be able to read all of the metrics, see what should be accomplished, and have ways to get things done too ? that?s effective time management. You can be a company of one, yet act like a company of 500 with a good project manager?s system ready.

Small Business owners don?t have months for a marketing strategy to show some results, so why wait? Get smart marketing solutions you can put to work today and start seeing results.Better yet, sign up to have marketing solutions delivered to you and boost you business now!

It?s Time For a Cruise Ship Travel

Vacation is essential to a healthy work and life balance. A brief respite from work rejuvenates a person?s mind, body and spirit. An alternative choice for an invigorating experience is taking a vacation in a luxury cruise ship. A cruise ship travel is designed to give the passenger utmost pleasure at the least fare as possible. The cruise liner offers all the amenities, services, facilities and activities one can find in a hotel such as entertainment, casino, sports, massage and spa, a variety of food, dance rooms, swimming pools and several others. There are also programs designed for children and the youth, as well as teen centers. Physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals are on-call for the medical and health needs of passengers.

The trip can last from one day (Florida to Bahamas) to more than three months. Cruise vacation deals have packages for different destinations such as the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, Arctic and Antarctic, Asia, Africa, Panama Canal, South America, Hawaii, and Repositioning (changing of destinations). A repositioning cruise liner moves to different travel destinations according to weather changes. The fare for a repositioning cruise is lower but the itinerary includes more ports and countries than the usual.

While a vacation in luxury cruise ships is usually associated with the wealthy for being expensive, there are cruise vacation deals that offer lesser fare with the same luxury and leisure. The best cruise ships, with complete package one can find in a luxury hotel, may cost from ,000 to ,000. But there is a one to two-day deal that costs as low as 0 a day.

There are always vacation packages that give discounts for early booking or group tour. Discounts given for early booking range from 60 percent to 80 percent per day, depending on the number of days chosen for the cruise travel. The discount would be higher for a package lasting more than five days than those that last for three days. A discount is even higher if booking is done five months ahead than the three-month advance booking. Thus, it is not hard to find best cruise ship discount deals for as low as or a day. That would be a great savings. Be patient to wait for a cruise ship deal that would suit your budget. Cruise liners extend discounts and promotions every now and then.

While out on the sea, communication with the family or business associates would not be a problem. Cruise ships now have internet cafes and hot spots for wireless access, as well as making cell phone calls. And there are also games and gadgets for your favorite computer entertainment.

There are, however, certain restrictions imposed by cruise liners. Verify if certain areas would not allow smoking. This policy takes into consideration the health of non-smokers who would be exposed to second-hand smoke. Also, check how many suitcases and weight are allowed. Weapons or liquors may be prohibited on board. So, be sure to make arrangements for these if you should bring them. If booking through a travel agency, the agent will surely provide the needed information to make anyone?s cruise travel a pleasurable experience to remember.

At&t Phone Systems For Business | Voip Telephone Systems Blog

In today?s business environment companies are doing even more than ever before to decrease costs while refraining from sacrificing key elements of their business success. Conferences and meetings have long been an important part of doing business. By engaging in a dialogue or brainstorming session with various personnel in a company valuable strategies can be developed and problems anticipated. However, with many businesses more global than ever before, more personnel choosing to work from home, and more work being outsourced to separate companies, the cost of organising face to face meetings can be prohibitive. This is besides the fact that travelling to and from meetings is a waste of valuable time that could be spent improving the business or generating income. ShoreTel conference phones offer an array of benefits to your business.

Customer Satisfaction

ShoreTel conference phones allow businesses to keep all the advantages of conferences and meetings without spending vast amounts of money. An interrupted conference call can be disastrous for your business, especially when communicating with clients or potential clients. Valuable time is lost, your company appears unprofessional, and messages may become scrambled. The customer service and satisfaction awards that ShoreTel have received prove that their products are reliable and their staff knowledgeable, able to swiftly and efficiently deal with any problems that may arise.

Ease of Use

ShoreTel equipment is invariably easy to install, understand and troubleshoot. By purchasing a ShoreTel conference phone for your business you know that you will save valuable business time that your staff can use to generate business success instead of to attempt to understand a complex piece of hardware.

Increased Efficiency

Staff no longer need to spend time travelling to and from meetings, worrying that they have left an important piece of information at their desk, or readjusting to being back in the office once the meeting is over. Instead, they simply use the ShoreTel conference phone. Unlike with some other conference phones, there is no danger of poor or unclear audio quality delaying the meeting or confusing their communications. Instead, every such conference call is streamlined and efficient, allowing the maximum amount of work to be carried out to the highest standard.

Direct Marketing List ? The Solution For Leads For a Home Based ...

Getting leads is the only way anyone is going to make money from their marketing campaign. A lead will lead to a sale and a sale will lead to profits. This is the natural progression of the marketing world and has been the backbone of many sales people in the world today. Of course, getting a lead is not easy and making a sale is even harder. There are many ways to improve your odds and increase your chances of making a sale; one of them is getting a highly targeted direct marketing list.

This has been touted as the one solution for leads for home based business and the creation of profits. Why? Well, this article will tell you about the benefits of a highly targeted direct marketing list, and how it can lead to maximum profit. The difference between a random business list and a targeted business list is pretty far reaching. A random business list is one that relies strictly on numbers, and they often run into pretty amazing figures of possibly even hundreds of thousands of names and contact details. They work on the principle of quantity, where the more contacts there are, the greater the possibility of a lead being created and thus a sale.

But of course, this has some major drawbacks. Because of the sheer number of contacts, there is no ?one? way of designing a cookie-cutter type of sales pitch that can appeal to a every type of prospect. This means that the strategy when approaching this sort of mass audience is one that is often a hit and miss; pointless like spearing fish blindfolded. Your resources will also be stretched quite thinly over a huge number of contacts and this means that most of your time will be tied up with administrative issues and replying of faxes and phone calls within your company rather than sales. That is not what marketing is about. Marketing is about leads, calling and making the pitch and closing the sale. The mistake that a lot of marketers make is that they approach their marketing strategy with the numbers strategy.

In this day and age, you need to be focused and your prospects highly targeted. Look at your product and service and think about the type of person that might be interested in purchasing it. Now place them within a range of people and soon you have a demographic. Within that demographic, you can come up with variables like purchasing power, in order to determine the likelihood of a sales conversion. In fact, if done right, the list of market possibilities and variables is endless. Your job is to classify the greater market share into a common group of prospects that you can easily penetrate with your marketing literature.

This is a battle half won already when you know that the market you are approaching has the potential to buy your product. This is the importance of having a direct marketing list that has been tailor made with your product in mind. And this, will be the difference between success and failure of your direct marketing campaign.

About Student Loans | Finance Help News

About Student Loans

It is harder and hader for individuals without higher education to get a good, well-paid career. This is very annoying for those teenagers who are not so academically gifted. It used to be that if you were intellectually gifted, you went on to college, because you needed a degree to get the best paid jobs, but there were also lots of fair to middling jobs for those who were willing to work their way up the greasy pole.

These jobs are disappearing or have already vanished. These days, if you join a supermarket as a shelf-stacker, you stay a shelf-stacker, because you have to have a higher education to run the supermarket. The most you can be is a junior manager.

This means that you require a degree to get jobs now, that were accessible to everybody before. So how do you earn a degree if you come from a poor family that cannot afford to sponsor you to study?

You will require a loan to invest in your future ? it is as easy as that and if your credit history is decent to neutral, then you should not have a difficulty getting a loan.

What is more, the government will almost certainly guarantee that loan too, which sounds like a good thing, unless you attempt to default on the loan.

So, should you go for a student loan? If you are good at academic topics, it is definitely a good concept and always has been, but what about for the others who also would like a decent job? This is a very hard decision. Who wants a $100,000 liability and a worthless degree or even a failure?

It ought to not be forgotten that you even require a degree for jobs such as trainer or physiotherapist, so this is a very, very hard decision. However, there is another option. You could get a job on the bottom rung of the ladder and go to night school or get day release from your firm. In this fashion, you are earning and gaining experience at the same time as climbing the ladder.

Another useful thing about this second method is that your employer can advise you on what courses are best for you and them. You may even get them to promise that if you pass the exam, you will definitely get promoted to the next level or whatever.

This approach to further education works extremely well for many people and is far less risky than simply procuring a degree in a subject that you like and then hoping you can use it to find a career that you like.

A possible downside is that if you leave that employer, other employers might not value your qualifications as highly or it may become harder to get a job in another profession.

These are alternative tips to getting a student loan, but a degree is still worth having if you are certain that you have a good opportunity of getting one and that it will get you a good job.

Student loans are the only advances that you will ever be given where you do not have to have a job to qualify. The interest rate is usually artificially low and you normally have six months grace after leaving university before you have to start making payments

Razer Blade: hands-on with 17 inches of gaming greatness

Something big's been brewing over in Carlsbad, and the time has finally come for it to be revealed to the world: the Razer Blade. The onyx aluminum beaut before you is the culmination of over three years of work by a stealth team of engineers -- many of them absorbed from the former OQO team. Despite being only 0.88 inches thick (thinner than another 17-incher we know...), the svelte number still packs a punch with a 2.8GHz Core i7-2640M CPU and GeForce GT 555M graphics replete with 2GB of GDDR5 video memory. All that graphical horsepower will splay your exploits on a 17.3-inch LED 1920 x 1080 full HD panel with an HD webcam nestled above. Rounding out the package is 8GB of RAM, three USB ports (one of the 3.0 persuasion), HDMI-out and a 60Wh integrated battery. And it could all be yours for $2,799 when it debuts in Q4 of this year.

That's dandy, but we're more stoked on the 480 x 800 LCD trackpad just to the right of the backlit keyboard. It works either as a multitouch-enabled input device or as an additional display for in-game info when the urge to slay demons with an external mouse strikes. North of that hotness lie ten fully customizable buttons, both in appearance (courtesy of a separate LCD) and in function. The keys and trackpad were last seen on a keyboard in a galaxy far, far away, and are running a custom Switchblade UI -- inspired by the company's oh so sexy Switchblade concept that we saw at CES. And just like the concept, Razer's used a custom lighting panel to ensure you can see those keys clearly from an angle -- people don't look straight down at their keyboards, after all. Follow on past the break for more impressions, video and PR.

Post-Katrina development gets music center | The Associated Press ...

Nearly six years after Hurricane Katrina, the Musicians' Village is thriving.

There are 72 single-family homes and 10 duplex units in a neighborhood that was razed after the storm swamped New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005, and then reborn as a haven for musicians.

The Habitat for Humanity-sponsored housing development was dreamed up during a conversation between two New Orleans-born entertainers, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and singer Harry Connick Jr.

On Thursday, another of their visions comes to fruition at the Village with the dedication of the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music.

The center, named after Marsalis' pianist father and intended to preserve New Orleans' music culture, includes a performance space, recording and computer facilities and classrooms for instruction in a range of musical arts.

Connick honed his craft under the elder Marsalis' tutelage.

Naming the center after the beloved jazz patriarch who has three other sons ? Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason ? in the entertainment business was inevitable, Connick said.

"It's because he's Ellis," he said matter-of-factly.

Branford Marsalis said the move wasn't his decision but is a fitting one based on the center's mission to help preserve and develop New Orleans' music and culture.

"My father is an educator at his core," he said. "And he's responsible for a lot of great musicians like Donald Harrison, Terence Blanchard, David Torkanowsky. Our house was always full of people and there were constant opportunities to learn. We felt like this was just the next chapter."

Asked whether this type of recognition would help raise his father's stock outside of New Orleans, Marsalis said that was not even a consideration.

"The thing with him is he doesn't even care about that (type of recognition)," he said.

Connick said he believed recognizing Ellis Marsalis acknowledges his accomplishments and influence on the city's musicians and culture.

"He could have left New Orleans and gone to New York and been one of the cats," Connick said. "But he recognized his priorities and he stayed here."

The $7.4 million center is outfitted for helping youngsters develop their talents and as a performance venue.

"I thought when I first saw the building, 'Man, this is exciting.' Every high school in the city has a spring or winter concert recital and they're usually held in the school's gym where you can't hear anything and the sound is horrible. Now, they can come here, in an acoustically, pristine environment and perform."

Connick said the facility has much potential, and he compared it to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, a specialized high school he attended.

"If it weren't for that school, I wouldn't be where I am today. This has that same type of potential. It's so cool," he said.

Connick said he could also envision the facility being used as a place for small concerts or sound stages for movies. "There are just too many variables to mention," he said.

Private donations primarily financed the project, which is also getting support through proceeds from sales of the song "A Lot Like Me," written by Connick and sung by his 13-year-old daughter, Kate. The song is tied to the debut of two American Girl dolls ? Cecile Rey and Marie-Grace Gardner, two characters living in 1850s New Orleans.

At Thursday afternoon's dedication, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu were to speak. Performances were planned by Connick, Branford Marsalis and Ellis Marsalis.

2011 Fantasy Football Sleepers: Five Players That ... - Fantasy Sports

The 2011 NFL season is quickly approaching and many fantasy football fans are preparing a draft strategy, in hopes of winning it all. While mock drafts allow the fantasy football fan to scour the usual players, they rarely account for the sleepers. A sleeper pick is a player that comes out of nowhere to become a valuable player to fantasy owners.

Last year it was Arian Foster of the Houston Texans that surprised the fantasy world and emerged as a top player. This year he is considered a No. 1 draft pick in many leagues. Picking that sleeper pick in your fantasy football league could make all the difference. Here is a look at some players that should be considered sleeper picks for the upcoming season.

Sam Bradford St. Louis Rams

Sam Bradford emerged as a solid quarterback a year ago, and this year he could even get better. Josh McDaniels is his new offensive quarterback and he installs a pass happy offense that succeeded in New England and made Kyle Orton a passing machine in Denver. Bradford was among the most happy signal callers a year ago and with a healthy receiving core he will be a threat again this year.

Ryan Mathews San Diego Chargers

Fantasy owners got burned banking on Ryan Mathews a year ago, as he was lost to an injury. This year he is healthy and he has the potential to be a top running back in the league. When he returned from injury he amassed 296 rushing yards and five scores. Tolbert will share some playing time early and that will let Matthews slip in the draft making him a steal late.

Matt Forte Chicago Bears

Matt Forte has been the one constant bright spot on the Bears offense. Forte always plays through injuries and he has never put up less than 1400 yards. With Jay Cutler under pressure, Forte will be the safety outlet and get plenty of catches. Forte should be considered a top tier running back this season.

Jacoby Ford Oakland Raiders

With the messy quarterback situation in Oakland it?s hard to take a flier on any Raider receiver. However, Ford is the real deal. His speed makes him impossible to cover and he is a nightmare for defenses. He is a deep threat that can get a huge chunk on one play and the Raiders love the deep ball. With Zach Miller gone, look for a big year from Ford.

Julio Jones Atlanta Falcons

When it comes to sleeper picks, the rookies always get an in-depth look. The Atlanta Falcons have promised more passing this year and they gave up the future to acquire Julio Jones. Roddy White will get double coverage on the other side of the field and Jones should put up big numbers in his rookie year. This rookie may go early with all the hype he has gotten and it will be for a good reason.

This is just a few of the players that could be considered great sleeper picks, but they are certainly not the only ones. Researching deep into your draft is sure to make you a winner when the season is over.

Defense: teen who shot gay classmate snapped

A teen who shot a gay classmate to death in a school classroom reached an emotional breaking point after weeks of being sexually harassed by the boy, a defense attorney said.

In his closing argument Thursday, lawyer Scott Wippert said his client Brandon McInerney didn't have problems with Larry King until King started wearing makeup, high heels and began sexually harassing him in the weeks leading up to the shooting. Wippert also blamed school administrators for not addressing the simmering feud between the boys.

"We're not saying Larry King is a terror, a bad kid, but the adults should have stopped this behavior," Wippert said.

Wippert spoke for about 90 minutes before court was adjourned. He will continue his closing argument Friday.

Calling the shooting of 15-year-old King a "shocking and unforgettable murder," Ventura County Deputy District Attorney Maeve Fox earlier implored jurors to find McInerney guilty of first-degree murder, the severest penalty he faces.

Using McInerney's own words via an interview with a psychologist, Fox said during closing arguments that the teen became enraged after Larry passed him in the hallway in February 2008 and made what he believed was the ultimate insult, saying "What's up baby?"

McInerney, then 14, made a conscious decision to kill King the next day, telling a friend he planned to shoot his classmate, she said. He hid a gun in his backpack and brought it to E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, where he shot King twice in the back of the head, a "cold-blooded execution," the prosecutor said.

"He intentionally got that gun; he told people what he was going to do," Fox said. "He shot and killed an innocent person."

The brazen shooting in front of stunned classmates in a computer classroom gained wide attention when authorities dubbed it a hate crime because King was gay and evidence suggested McInerney had white supremacy leanings. Extensive news coverage persuaded a judge to move the case from Ventura County to neighboring Los Angeles County.

Defense attorneys do not deny McInerney killed King, but they contend their client came from a violent upbringing. They say he snapped when he heard moments before the shooting that King wanted to change his first name to Latisha.

McInerney has pleaded not guilty to one count each of murder and a hate crime. If convicted, he faces more than 50 years in prison. Jurors also can consider a conviction of voluntary manslaughter, which carries a maximum 21-year term.

In her arguments that the slaying was premeditated, Fox said one student testified she overheard McInerney say he was going to shoot King four days before it occurred. She said McInerney believed most of the school didn't like King and killing him would make him a hero.

"He thought he was doing everyone a favor," she said.

Fox also pointed out McInerney's actions in the hours and minutes leading up to the shooting: Nearly forgetting to grab the .22-caliber handgun from his house, hiding it in his backpack and then contemplating not shooting King.

She said all of those factors, told to the psychologist, show McInerney did not kill King in the heat of passion, which is required for a voluntary manslaughter conviction.

"It's stunning in its clarity," she said. "He's completely aware of what he did."

Claims of drought-driven declines in plant productivity, global food security refuted: Modeling errors produced exaggerated claims

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2011) ? A new, comprehensive study by an international team of scientists, including scientists at Boston University in the US and the Universities of Vi?osa and Campinas in Brazil, has been published in the current issue of Science (August 26, 2011) refuting earlier claims that drought has induced a decline in global plant productivity during the past decade and posed a threat to global food security.

Those earlier findings published by Zhao and Running in the August 2010 issue of Science (Vol. 329, p. 940) also warned of potentially serious consequences for biofuel production and the global carbon cycle. The two new technical comments in Science contest these claims on the basis of new evidence from NASA satellite data, which indicates that Zhao and Running's findings resulted from several modeling errors, use of corrupted satellite data and statistically insignificant trends.

The main premise of Zhao and Running's model-based study was an expectation of increased global plant productivity during the 2000s based on previously observed increases during the 1980s and 1990s under supposedly similar, favorable climatic conditions. Instead, Zhao and Running were surprised to see a decline, which they attributed it to large-scale droughts in the Southern Hemisphere.

"Their model has been tuned to predict lower productivity even for very small increases in temperature. Not surprisingly, their results were preordained," said Arindam Samanta, the study's lead author. (Samanta, now at Atmospheric and Environmental Research Inc., Lexington, MA, worked on the study as a graduate student at Boston University's Department of Geography and Environment.)

Zhao and Running's predictions of trends and year-to-year variability were largely based on simulated changes in the productivity of tropical forests, especially the Amazonian rainforests. However, according to the new study, their model failed miserably when tested against comparable ground measurements collected in these forests.

"The large (28%) disagreement between the model's predictions and ground truth imbues very little confidence in Zhao and Running's results," said Marcos Costa, coauthor, Professor of Agricultural Engineering at the Federal University of Vi?osa and Coordinator of Global Change Research at the Ministry of Science and Technology, Brazil.

This new study also found that the model actually predicted increased productivity during droughts, compared to field measurements, and decreased productivity in non-drought years 2006 and 2007 in the Amazon, in contradiction to the main finding of the previous report. "Such erratic behavior is typical of their poorly formulated model, which lacks explicit soil moisture dynamics," said Edson Nunes, coauthor and researcher at the Federal University of Vi?osa, Brazil.

The new study indicates that Zhao and Running used NASA's MODIS satellite data products, such as vegetation leaf area, without paying caution to data corruption by clouds and aerosols. "Analyzing the same satellite data products after carefully filtering out cloud and aerosol-corrupted data, we could not reproduce the patterns published by Zhao and Running. Moreover, none of their reported productivity trends are statistically significant," said Liang Xu, coauthor and graduate student at Boston University.

In any case, the trends in plant productivity reported by Zhao and Running are miniscule -- a 0.34% reduction in the Southern Hemisphere offset by a 0.24% gain in the Northern Hemisphere for a net decline of 0.1% over a ten-year period from 2000 to 2009. "This is the proverbial needle in a haystack," said Simone Vieira, coauthor and researcher at the State University of Campinas, Brazil. "There is no model accurate enough to predict such minute changes over such short time intervals, even at hemispheric scales."

Any investigation of trends in plant growth requires not only consistent and accurate climate and satellite data but also a model suitable for such purposes. "The Zhao and Running study does not even come close," said Ranga Myneni, senior author and Professor of Geography, Boston University. "Their analysis of satellite data is flawed because they included poor quality data and do not bother to test trends for statistically significance. Our analyses of four different higher-quality MODIS satellite vegetation products that have been carefully filtered for data corruption show no statistically significant trends over 85% of the global vegetated lands."

This study was funded through a research grant by the NASA MODIS project to Prof. Myneni for investigation on the use of MODIS satellite data to study vegetation on our planet.

Life Inc.: Do you eat lunch at your desk?

Between the weak economy and the high unemployment rate, it?s not surprising that many people are choosing to eat at their desks rather than take a proper lunch break.

But there can be downsides to sharing your sandwich with your keyboard and spreadsheets.

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday on the office annoyances that come with a cubicle farm full of eaters: The yucky smells, unappetizing sounds and potential for spills.

Is it worth it?

The Wall Street Journal quotes one expert who says taking a break might actually leave you more energized, boosting output.

What do you think of eating at your desk?
