Etta James condition better, taken off respirator (AP)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Etta James' manager says the terminally ill blues singer is breathing on her own after being taken off a respirator.

Lupe De Leon says Friday that the change in her condition is great news and that the singer's blood pressure is normal.

De Leon says James was put on a respirator when she was hospitalized in Southern California on Dec. 21 because she was having trouble breathing.

James has been diagnosed with terminal leukemia and is suffering from dementia. She has been receiving mostly at-home care.

Earlier this month, a judge set aside $350,000 for her medical care.

James is best known for the hit "At Last."

A college football playoff system? Forget it

Coach Tom O'Brien of the North Carolina State Wolfpack gets doused after the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • A playoff system for college football would be a big mistake, says Terence Moore
  • For one thing, student-athletes would have even less time for studying, he says
  • Moore: Where would you play the games? And how would participants be chosen?
  • Home attendance in the playoffs for teams at lower levels is frequently low, Moore says

Editor's note: Terence Moore is a sports columnist of more than three decades. He has worked for the Cincinnati Enquirer, the San Francisco Examiner, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and AOL Sports. Follow him on Twitter.

(CNN) -- When it comes to the horror of bringing a playoff system to the big boys of college football, there are several things for members of the Knee-Jerk Society of America to think about.

The problem is, they don't wish to think. They prefer emotion.

Mostly, they fume over the current system that chooses a national champion through a combination of polls and computers with the so-called Bowl Championship Series. They say a playoff system is the best way to determine a champion on the field, and they are correct. But only if you ignore things you have to ... think about.

For instance: Name those screaming the loudest about a playoff system for the Alabamas, the Ohio States and the Southern Californias.

The fans? Yep, because they are, well, fans.

The coaches? Uh-huh. In their minds, a playoff system gives them the chance to add millions to their millions.

The media? Definitely. They have airwaves, cyberspace and newsprint to fill, and if you're ESPN or the networks, a playoff system gives you the chance to add billions to your billions.

Terence Moore

Terence Moore

Guess who gets ignored? The players.

Pro players get paid for their sacrifices regarding extra games, but college players don't. And that's just for starters.

Consider that every team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1-A) has about 120 players. On the high side, an average of five or six of those players make NFL training-camp rosters. Of the nearly 110 left, maybe 40 believe they should have made an NFL training-camp roster. So, a large portion of that 40 joins those five or six in spending more time studying playbooks than textbooks.

That leaves roughly 70 student-athletes on a team each season doing whatever it takes to get a degree -- and it takes a lot for that group, even without an extra game or three.

Just one extra game means a slew of more practices, film sessions and team meetings for those student-athletes.

"A playoff system certainly would have its challenges, and it's already a challenge now," said Roddy Jones, a four-year starter at running back for Georgia Tech. He is a three-time Academic All-Atlantic Coast Conference player, and he has earned his undergraduate degree in management along the way to seeking an MBA.

Not only that, Jones is part of an advisory council involving Georgia Tech athletes and administrators. He said an average day for a football student-athlete can start as early as 6:30 a.m., stretch through the end of a tutoring session at 9 p.m. and continue with more studying at the dormitory.

"Time management is the biggest thing," Jones said. "People just see the games on Saturdays, but we're practicing Monday through Friday, and we have classes every day as well. A traditional student has the weekend to get a project done. We don't have that liberty, because we're in a hotel on Fridays, getting ready for the games. It can be a mental grind."

And that's without a playoff system.

That's also coming from Jones, among the elite of student-athletes, who added, "A lot of those games with playoffs would come during finals weeks or at other times that are very stressful for any student, particularly for a student-athlete."

OK, so you couldn't care less whether Johnny can read or write. You just want to know whether Johnny can punt, pass or kick.

Tell me this: A playoff system would have how many games, and who's to say it wouldn't keep expanding before expanding some more? While several athletics directors want a "plus one" approach featuring a championship game after the 35 bowl games, others want two semifinal games and then a championship game.

President Obama wants eight teams playing three rounds.

Washington State coach Mike Leach wants 64 teams.

No doubt, others wouldn't mind putting all of the Football Bowl Subdivision's 120 teams in the postseason.

Where would you play these games? The site of current bowl games, you say, or maybe NFL stadiums, neutral sites or various places on the dark side of the moon? How many -- if any -- of these locations would be available?

If you use bowls, which ones? And since the bulk of the TV and advertising revenue would flow to playoff games, what would happen financially to the bulk of the bowls without playoff games?

How would you choose the participants for a playoff system, and wouldn't that create more controversy?

I know. They have a playoff system in college basketball called March Madness, but here's something else I know: The academic status of participating dribblers often has been a disaster. In fact, if the new academic rules that the NCAA adopted this fall were in place last spring, Connecticut wouldn't be allowed to defend its national championship.

Connecticut barely would have made the tournament.

I also know they have a playoff system for the lower levels of college football. The one for the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division 1-AA) began November 26, and it will end with the championship game January 7.

Here's something else I know: The last NCAA report on the financial status of its schools at the highest level was for the 2009-10 season, and it showed that only 22 out of those 120 athletics departments turned a profit. Which raises the question: How many football programs for those schools would agree to lose revenue by slicing regular-season games to keep a playoff system from lasting until Valentine's Day?

Zero.

Oh, and home attendance in the playoffs for teams at those lower levels is frequently lower than their regular-season games. Such was the case last season for traditional FCS powers Delaware and Appalachian State, and such is the case this year for North Dakota State, according to its sports information department.

I say that because Georgia fans dominated the Georgia Dome this month for the Southeastern Conference title game. Their LSU counterparts were sparse. Word back in Baton Rouge was that LSU fans were saving their money for the Bowl Championship Series title game next week in New Orleans between LSU and Alabama.

Which raises another question: How many folks would travel multiple times to see their team during a playoff system involving the big boys?

The answer?

Just leave the current system alone.

Leaked memo details Verizon's $2 fee for paying your bill; autodraft or ACH the only way out (update: confirmed)

A couple of years back, AT&T offered select customers a $25 prepaid MasterCard to switch their billing over to autodraft. Soon, Verizon Wireless will be following Sprint's footsteps and charging you for every month that you aren't using that very system. Tactical differences aside, the leaked memo shown above details what has to be one of the most consumer-unfriendly policy changes since the carrier boosted its early termination fee for "advanced devices." Effective January 15th, any customer that opts to pay their wireless bill online or over the phone will be charged an extra $2 each month, and the only way to sidestep it is to sign up for AutoPay or to pay by electronic check, where there's no credit card fee passed on to the carrier.

For those unaware, AutoPay automatically drafts the most recent amount from either a linked checking / savings account or a credit card on file, and while we can understand VZW's desire to better control when it's getting paid, charging customers to make it happen is just downright ludicrous. Here's a thought, Verizon: enforce stricter penalties on late payments, or just offer those that shift to AutoPay a small discount for going out of their way to make your life a little easier. Or, you know, for all those hours that your network has been down during the holidays.

Update: Verizon has officially confirmed the change to its policies and the $2 surcharge you'll be hit with each month if you're not using autodraft or some other small subset of payment options. Head after the break for all the details straight from the horse's mouth.

[Thanks, Alex]

Celebrity of the Year Finalist #2: Lady Gaga!

We're down to the final two.

With the remaining moments of 2011 ticking down by the day (there are only two left!), THG has been ranking the most newsworthy celebrities of the past year.

Starting at #10 with Lindsay Lohan, the countdown moved on to Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, viral video stars, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. All worthy peeps.

Pretty much everyone in the British Royal Family came in at #4, followed by the winner himself, Charlie Sheen, at #3. Which brings us to COTY finalist #2 ...

... Ms. Lady Gaga!

Lady Gaga Motivational Poster

Yes, Lady Gaga knows how to use shock value and outrageous antics to get attention, but she's so much more than a flash in the pan. The 25-year-old is an artiste, a powerhouse performer and a pop cultural sensation, through and through.

Can anyone really dispute that after the 2011 she's had?

With the release of her epic album Born This Way, and the premiere of its title track at the Grammy Awards, which featured her hatching from an egg on stage, Gaga put the planet on notice that she's just getting started as her generation's pop icon.

Lady Gaga characterized BTW as "something so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or a fucking meat dress." Fans and critics agreed she is taking music to the "next level."

An advocate for self-acceptance regardless of race or sexual orientation, her music is known for not only its catchy beats, but for its artistic and cultural references.

Subsequent singles "Judas" and "The Edge of Glory" continued to push the envelope, receiving criticism for some concepts but acclaim for her overall delivery and range.

Later in the year, "You and I" and "Marry the Night" gained recognition for their elaborate music videos, not to mention introspective looks inside the mind of Gaga.

That alone is an impressive list, but it's not even half the story with the girl born Stefani Germanotta who went on to become the hardest working woman in showbiz.

Hardly a day goes by without her shutting it down with monster live efforts, collaborating with new artists, dreaming up new ideas ... or chatting with fans on Twitter.

A self-proclaimed student of fame, she always has her finger on the pulse of pop culture, and has become a living, breathing, one-woman Internet meme in a sense.

Take a bow, Lady Gaga. Here's a look at some of her MANY performances from the past year, which has been one we'll always remember for how exciting she made it:

Community rallies to help victims of Christmas fire

Published: Monday, December 26, 2011 at 5:36 p.m.
Last Modified: Monday, December 26, 2011 at 5:36 p.m.

A Christmas Day fire has left an Edneyville family homeless and in need of help.

Gary Moore, his wife, Sabrina, and the couple's three children were not at home when the blaze broke out around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The fire completely engulfed the singlewide mobile home on Skipper Lane off Pilot Mountain Road in Edneyville, said Edneyville Deputy Fire Chief Mark Reagan.

"The home is gone," he said Monday, adding that the fire's cause has not yet been determined. "It's still under investigation by the Henderson County Fire Marshal."

Offers of help were already coming into the Henderson County American Red Cross office Monday, said Executive Director Mike Williams.

A man called the office and said that he noticed smoke in the trailer park while he was there visiting relatives and went to offer assistance, Williams said.

"When he saw the smoke, he went to the trailer and got the back door open and hollered for people, but no one answered," Williams said. "But there was a little black dog there, so he got the dog out."

The dog ran off, but Williams said the man wanted the family to know that the dog was unharmed by the fire.

The agency put the family up at a local hotel temporarily until other housing arrangements could be made.

The Moores lost everything in the fire, including Christmas presents for the three children, ages, 5, 7 and 11, he said.

"We sent out our disaster response team to provide immediate assistance," Williams said, adding that most likely other local agencies, such as the Salvation Army, will be providing assistance in the days to come.

Offers of help were already coming in the day after the fire, said Reagan.

"Toys for Tots contacted us this morning and expressed interest in replacing the toys," he said. "There's a lot of positive coming out of this already."

The Edneyville Fire Department has set up a collection box where donations may be dropped off at any time, said Fire Chief Robert Griffin. The box is located in the foyer of the fire department at 1 Firehouse Drive (off U.S. 64) in Edneyville.

The fire department is collecting clothes, toys, food and household items for the family. Clothing sizes are 7-8 Misses and 8 1/2 shoe for one of the daughters; 14 girls and 7 1/2 shoe for another daughter; and a child's size 6 with a 13 size shoe for the son. Adult clothing sizes needed are men's pants size 32, shirts size large and shoes size 11 1/2 shoe; and women's pants size 20, shirts size 2XL and shoes size 10.

Firefighters from the Dana, Bat Cave. Gerton and Hendersonville fire departments responded to the fire, along with the Henderson County Rescue Squad, EMS and the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, Reagan said.

Houston Astros, Drayton McLane, and Baseball Ownership

This post was written by Johanna Wagner on December 26, 2011
Posted Under: Johanna's View

Drayton McLane is no longer the owner of the Houston Astros, and the Astros is one of the few teams that I haven?t written much about while writing about the NL Central.? They aren?t going to be that good, there isn?t much to say.? But for Richard Justice, long-time columnist for the Houston Chronicle, there is much to say about McLane and his ownership.

While I can?t speak to too much on the personal level that Justice notes, I do want to write a moment about some of the things about McLane?s ownership that as an advocate for fans I find critical.? Justice points out in this piece that McLane sat behind home plate each night, but also strolled around the concourse to meet fans.? He responded to complaints, and demonstrated what customer service should be.? He answered phone calls and emails, and generally reached out to anyone who reached out to him.? McLane? believed? a franchise should be good citizens of its community and give something back. He is right.? Whether it brings attention to the community by shining the nation?s spotlight onto the city through winning, or whether it just uses its clout to help those citizens by building ball fields, assisting veterans or educating kids it does not matter.? Baseball is not a game meant to feed off of a city.? It is one meant to add blessings to it.

Without that outlook by an ownership group, there should be no public money used to assist a team. And as ownership groups become larger, and the organization becomes more corporate, there is every reason to believe this need to give something back to the city and its fans will fade.? That sense that the owner cares about what brings us to the ballpark is one of the things we love about baseball.? McLane, at least through Justice?s eyes, did that.

Oregon Insider: Ohio State case offers some idea of what the NCAA might do with the Ducks

Oregon fans attending next week's Rose Bowl might want to savor the experience.

Who knows when they will be back again?

The ongoing NCAA investigation into Oregon's recruiting receded into the background during the Ducks' run to the first Pac-12 championship and a third straight appearance in a BCS bowl game.

But the NCAA investigators haven't gone away and, at some point, they are going to decide whether there is enough evidence to issue a notice of allegations.

The NCAA acted against Ohio State last week, taking away three scholarships from the Buckeyes for each of the next three recruiting classes and slapping them with a one-season ban on postseason play.

That means no Big 10 championship, and no bowl next year.

There was some teeth-gnashing in Columbus, Ohio, over the verdict, which is a little harsher than what the Buckeyes proposed for themselves. But, really, Ohio State didn't get off too badly.

Three scholarships a year is a small fraction of the allowable 85. It's nothing compared with the 10-per-year limitation USC faces for the next three years, NCAA penalties stemming from the Reggie Bush mess. USC's bowl ban, which has been served, was two years.

It's difficult to know what is in store for the Ducks. NCAA investigations are hush-hush, and really, you never know what the NCAA might do if we get around to the penalty phase.

For their part, the Ducks are revealing only that which state open records law forces them to reveal.

Oregon hired the law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King in March to conduct an internal investigation into the matter. According to a heavily-redacted invoice released after a records request from the Oregonian, the firm still was plugging away in November, conducting interviews and conferencing.

This has been going on since March, so clearly there has been plenty of ground to cover, possibly involving more than Houston-based talent scout Willie Lyles.

Remember, the allegations first surfaced about Lyles' mentorship of five-star recruit Lache Seastrunk. Seastrunk, from Temple, Texas signed with Oregon in 2010. Shortly thereafter, Oregon purchased a $25,000 national recruiting package from Complete Scouting Services, which was owned and operated by Lyles.

The materials received for the 25-grand were revealed to be largely outdated and useless. Lyles since has suggested that perhaps the Ducks were paying more for his access and influence than for his scouting service.

As it turns out, he had advisor/mentorship roles with a number of Texas prep players who turned up at Oregon, including Seastrunk, LaMichael James, Dontae Williams, Tra Carson and Marcus Davis. Lyles' connections with other schools, such as LSU and California, have also been called into question.

Documents made public by Oregon in response to records requests reveal a number of phone calls between Lyles and coaches and employees of the UO football program, particularly around important dates on the recruiting calendar. So there is plenty of smoke surrounding the Lyles-Oregon relationship.

But the documents, which include email exchanges, also reveal a cordial working relationship between the Bond, Schoeneck & King attorneys, UO administrators and the NCAA investigators. It appears from what we've been allowed to see, that Oregon is cooperating completely with the NCAA.

This is important. Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a member of the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions, said Ohio State "met its obligation to cooperate" with the NCAA.

By contrast, former USC athletic director Mike Garrett thumbed his nose at NCAA investigators.

In the end, the NCAA hit Ohio State with the charge of "failure to monitor" Jim Tressel's football program. USC was hammered with the more serious "lack of institutional control."

It doesn't take a genius to connect the dots and see that the NCAA slammed USC not only for rules violations, but also for not taking the NCAA rules and the school's obligation to enforce them seriously.

Oregon apparently is playing ball with the NCAA, which should count for something if and when the time comes.

But Ohio State played ball too, and next year the Buckeyes will be home for the holidays.

Community steps up to make Christmas brighter

Last week, 300 local residents who needed a helping hand got it. Each were warmed with Christmas dinner and had their pick of winter coats and warm clothes?collected largely by local realtors?to take home.

?We made sure that Santa Claus was here and came to the dinner and everybody really seemed to enjoy themselves,? said Major Brad Smith of the Salvation Army, whose Richmond branch brought Christmas early to low-income residents.

The Salvation Army is just one local charity making the holiday season a little brighter this year.

Smith believes the need in the community is greater this year.

?We have people that call us and they have some really sad situations that we try to help them out in to make sure they have a good Christmas,? he said.

The community has stepped up with donations, and Smith said he?s grateful to all who?ve offered their support.

As of last Saturday, the community donated $127,244 to the local branch?that?s $6,000 less than last year. Donations can still be made at Christmas Kettles around town until 4 p.m. Dec. 24. (Those who donate cheques will be issued a tax receipt.)

Donations of cheques and new toys are also accepted directly at the Salvation Army, 8280 Gilbert Rd.

All money goes toward a weekly community luncheon and goes to help people buy groceries throughout the year. It also goes toward the operation of a 10-bed shelter.

This year proved a busy one for Richmond Food Bank, which served an average of 500 households per week?a 60 per cent increase in three years.

But executive director Margaret Hewlett said the community has offered lots of support this season?through donations of cash, food and time.

Hewlett said there is growing awareness of the food bank and the needs that exist in the community. But there are still lots of opportunities for the community to help, detailed at richmondfoodbank.org.

?There opportunity to help is ongoing. We?re a year-round service and always open to donations and inquiries from potential volunteers,? she said.

Help this holiday season has also come from the Richmond Christmas Fund, which distributes grocery vouchers to over 2,000 low-income residents, and provides over 900 children with toys, games and books.

Co-ordinator Ryan Luetzen of Volunteer Richmond Information Services, which organizes the fund, said donations from individuals, businesses and community groups have totalled $125,000 this season.

The Richmond Auto Mall?s Windows of Hope is among the large fundraising campaigns for the Richmond Christmas Fund. The effort, in which teams of volunteers paint windows of car dealerships with a holiday theme, resulted in a $20,000 donation from the Richmond Auto Mall Association.

Another significant contribution came from the Richmond Christmas Fund Realtor Challenge, organized by Patti Martin and Shafik Ladha. With contributions from nine other local realtors, at least $10,000 has been raised so far.

Ashton Service Group contributed a further $5,000 to the fund and sponsored the program?s new online donation page.

And more than a dozen local businesses each contributed $500 as part of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Member to Family Challenge.

At the fund?s first drive-thru event held Dec. 8 at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel, nearly $2,000 was donated, along with dozens of bags of toys and books.

Donations can still be made to the Christmas fund at www.volunteer richmond.ca.

Princeton Irvin Parker: Insecurity Kills

One of the most fascinating characters in the Bible's Christmas saga is King Herod. The Bible depicts how the birth of Jesus affected King Herod in Matthew 2:3, which says: "When King Herod had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him." The single greatest gift to have ever hit the earth had just been born, but when the news was brought to Herod, he was too disturbed to acknowledge or appreciate it. Many people today are mentally and spiritually bound by insecurity. Insecurity leads to fear, jealousy, worry, and ultimately conditions like depression and paranoia. In the case of Herod, he was intimidated by the idea that the new baby boy had scripture on his side. The wise men who gave the news of the saviors' birth, informed Herod that this baby boy was the fulfillment of prophecy and would be the one who took over Herod's kingdom.

Insecurity handicaps the mind, by becoming a filter that all thoughts pass through. This makes it so that your vision is blurred. When you are insecure and you hear about another individuals' success, instead of thinking "That's so great for him" the insecure mind says "Why couldn't I have done that?" or "Why does everything good happen to him?". When you're insecure and in a leadership position, the mind believes that everyone around you is trying to become more powerful or intelligent than you.

Insecurity kills. Herod's insecurity lead to the death of others. Herod was so frustrated when the wise men did not return to tell him where Jesus was, that he killed all little baby boys under the age of two in his kingdom, seeking to end the life of Jesus in the process. Insecure people may not do any physical killing, but many try to kill a persons' influence, spirit, dreams, goals, joy, inspiration, motivation, or even their emotions. This is why many young people are involved in bullying, because it enables them to feel powerful by crushing other young people, so that they themselves are never hurt. Insecurity does not just kill others, it can also ultimately take the life of the person who harbors it. Herod eventually died, having never found baby Jesus, killing almost an entire generation of young baby boys in his kingdom, and never successfully being able to rule or lead. He died powerless, defeated, and as a victim to his fears.

The greatest irony in this story is that Herod fought so hard to protect his own kingdom, when Jesus was not even interested in taking it. Jesus came to establish a spiritual kingdom, and had Herod stuck around long enough to witness Jesus in his power, not only would Herod have realized that his position was secure, but also could have secured his place in Gods' kingdom. Insecurity can make you so paranoid that you die from undue worry, stress, and fear. In the process, you also never achieve your unique purpose, because of feeling that you are not good enough, or worrying that someone will take your place.

Jesus came down to earth for everyone, including Herod. Herod missed out on getting to know the greatest gift to have ever been given. He missed his opportunity to be touched by the miraculous hand of Jesus Christ himself because he was so afraid of who Jesus was. We set ourselves free from insecurities when we take the time to acknowledge that all life comes from one source. The same God who endows one with gifts, can do the same for another. No one is more valuable or treasured than the other, and with a world filled with more than seven billion people, I think there is enough room for everyone to have a purpose, and a space to succeed of their own. During this Holiday season, and throughout the coming New Year, don't let insecurity keep you from embracing your gifts, and appreciating the gifts in others.

GOP: Gingrich, Perry Will Not Be On Virginia Ballot

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.

"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.

Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.

Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

The load of catching up on organizing work and a lack of advertising money to counter an onslaught of negative ads from his rivals have been major disadvantages.

Gingrich had to leave New Hampshire on Wednesday and race to Virginia, where he needed 10,000 valid voters' signatures to secure a spot on the ballot.

He said Wednesday he had enough ballot signatures, but he wanted to come to Virginia to deliver them personally. Taking no chances, his volunteers asked everyone to sign petitions before entering Gingrich's rally Wednesday night in Arlington, just across the Potomac River from Washington.

Gingrich's early-December rise in several polls gave him renewed hopes of carrying his campaign deep into the primary season. Failure to compete in Virginia, which is among the "Super Tuesday" primaries, would deal a huge blow to any contender who had not locked up the nomination by then.

The state party's Shipley said the party was validating petitions the candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the state elections board. It began validating signatures Friday morning.

The 10,000 registered voters must also include 400 signatures from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.

It was unclear if Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum or former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman submitted petitions to the state board.

Meanwhile, Virginia's Democrats said President Barack Obama's re-election campaign gathered enough signatures to get him on the state's primary ballot though he was the only candidate who qualified.

Egypt Islamists take two-thirds of 2nd-round vote (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt's two leading Islamist parties won about two-thirds of votes for party lists in the second round of polling for a parliament that will help draft a new constitution after decades of autocratic rule, the election committee said Saturday.

The party list led by the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won 36.3 percent of the list vote, while the ultra-conservative Salafi al-Nour Party took 28.8 percent, pushing the liberal Wafd party into third place.

The vote, staged over six weeks, is the first free election Egypt has held after the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak, who routinely rigged polls before he was overthrown by a popular uprising in February.

The West long looked to Mubarak and other strongmen in the region to help combat Islamist militants, and has watched warily as Islamist parties have topped votes in Tunisia, Morocco and now Egypt.

Parliament's prime job will be appointing a 100-strong assembly to write a new constitution which will define the president's powers and parliament's clout in the new Egypt.

Second-round results for party lists gave the liberal Wafd Party 9.6 percent of the vote. The Egyptian Bloc of mostly liberal and leftist parties won 7 percent of the list vote.

Analysts say poor coordination among non-Islamist groups has divided the liberal vote, sometimes handing the majority to an Islamist by default.

TRANSITION

The election, which began on November 28 and ends on January 11, has been marred by a flare-up of clashes in Cairo between police and protesters demanding an immediate end to military rule.

At least 17 people were killed in the protests, in which troops clubbed women and men even as they lay on the ground.

The ruling army council fuelled suspicions it wanted to hang on to power, even after a new president was elected, when its cabinet last month proposed inserting articles in the new constitution that would have shielded it from civilian scrutiny.

The army took over after Mubarak was ousted and remains in charge until a presidential election in mid-2012, but parliament will have a popular mandate that the military lacks.

In the first round of the poll, the Brotherhood's FJP won about 37 percent of list votes and Nour about 24 percent.

The complex electoral system gives two-thirds of the 498 elected seats to lists and the rest to individuals.

The FJP said it had won 40 of the 60 individual seats up for grabs in the second round, similar to its first-round showing.

College Sports: Pac-12 football: Matt Barkley to return for senior season (let’s just hand USC the South title now)

The big news out of Trojanland on Thursday is big news for the Pac-12 next fall:

USC quarterback Matt Barkley just announced he?s pulling a Luck.

Barkley will pass on the top tier of the 2012 NFL Draft and return to USC for one more season ? his final season ? as the presumptive Heisman favorite (assuming RG3 turns pro) ? and the potential first pick in the 2012 draft.

Sound familiar?

(More details here.)

I?ll have more on Barkley?s decision ? and how it impacts the Pac-12 and national landscape ? in the next 24 hours.

Remember, the Trojans are eligible for the conference title and a bowl berth in 2012.

And remember, the bulk of USC?s starting lineup is expected to return.

The Trojans will no doubt be a top-10 team in the preseason polls and the heavy, heavy, HEAVY favorite to win the South, which was a mess this season and doesn?t, at first glance, appear to have much more clarity in ?12.

Ben Heck delivers holiday cheer to gamer with modded macro controller

Patrick Crowley
Benjamin J. Heckendorn is no stranger to game pads designed for people with disabilities, but the macro controller he just whipped up for Patrick Crowley (pictured above) might be his most impressive accessibility hack yet. On the latest episode of his show the modding extraordinaire crafts a breakout box that allows a complex set of commands to be triggered with just the touch of a button or foot switch. The box at the heart of the project is powered by a PIC microcontroller that takes inputs from a series of modular switches (up to eight) and turns them into virtual button presses that are fed to an Xbox 360 through a standard controller. In addition to being able to swap in eight different inputs, each one can be programmed to perform a different macro. We won't ruin all of the fun -- check out the PR and full episode after the break to watch everything from Ben Heck's holiday epiphany through the final testing.
