Why you were just 'unfriended' on Facebook

In the internet age, it is the ultimate snub. So why do people unfriend each other?

Obviously, what people post can strain their online relationships, but not having a mutual female friend is much more likely to lead to the ties being severed.

The word "unfriending" entered common vocabulary only a few years ago, and since then researchers have been trying to understand why and when it happens. The answers relate to a bigger outstanding question in web science: are online social relationships fundamentally different to physical world ties? The likes of Facebook also want to know what drives unfriending, because decaying friendships is bad for business.

Up until now, the evidence suggested that unfriending on online social networks was driven mainly by too-frequent posts about polarising topics. Too much religion? Goodbye. Support gay marriage? Unfriend. And in a recent survey of US adults, 55 per cent said they unfriended people because of their offensive status updates or comments. That was the most popular reason, followed by "not knowing the person well" (41 per cent), and "tried to sell me something" (39 per cent).

So far, so unsurprising.

Yet Daniele Quercia at the University of Cambridge had doubts about whether politics and rudeness really were the most common reasons for severing Facebook ties. After all, he says, these recent studies and surveys were based on self-reported behaviour, not hard data. And more importantly, the reasons people gave for severing their Facebook ties are not the same factors that lead to the dissolution of offline relationships.

For example, studies dating back to the 1980s show that friendships have always been more likely to decay when there are fewer common ties with others in a social group ("embeddedness") and a disparity between age, occupation and education. So while your buddy might make the occasional sexist joke you dislike, that is much less likely to influence the fate of your friendship than whether or not you have mutual friends, are the same age and both work in IT.

So Quercia and his colleagues analysed the dynamics of more than 34,000 Facebook relationships to find patterns that correlated with unfriending. He presented the results at the Web Science conference in Evanston, Illinois, last month.

Sure enough, a lack of similarity, especially between ages, and few mutual friendships were the dominant factors correlating with unfriending - all of which mirrors the decline of physical-world relationships. Quercia also found that having a mutual female friend makes unfriending less likely than sharing a male friend. Clues as to why come from research conducted by Robert Bell in the 1980s on gender roles in friendship. In short, Bell showed that women tend to form deeper, stronger friendships, and they strengthen relationships beyond their direct ties in their social network.

Finally, Quercia also showed that personality type matters. Perhaps not surprisingly, a relationship is more likely to break if one of the people is neurotic or introverted.

Facebook may be a new environment, but the age-old rules of friendship apply there too.

How clouds are formed: Rate of condensation much slower than thought

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Bristol with collaborators from ETH-Zurich have shown that the rate of condensation of water on organic aerosol particles in the atmosphere can be very slow, taking many hours for a particle to change in size. This could have significant consequences for understanding how clouds are formed, affecting climate.

The influence of aerosols (small particles less than 1 micrometre in diameter) and clouds (liquid droplets 1 -- 1000 micrometres diameter) represents one of the largest uncertainties in our understanding of trends in past global climate and predicting future climate change, as recognised by the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

One of the most significant 'known unknowns' is how quickly water can condense on the small aerosol particles to grow and become cloud droplets, influencing the albedo (reflectivity) of clouds and cloud lifetime (precipitation).

In a study published July 2 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Jonathan Reid of the University of Bristol and colleagues show that the rate of cloud droplet growth can be strongly dependent on the composition of the aerosol.

For aerosol particles that have high viscosity (equivalent to saying they behave like treacle or even bitumen), water evaporation and condensation can be very slow, taking many hours.

For particles that are much less viscous (more like olive oil or even water), evaporation and condensation can be very fast: less than 1 second.

Professor Reid said: "Although not providing all the answers, this work helps us better understand the 'known unknowns'. Most importantly, it demonstrates that better understanding the rate at which water condenses on particles in the atmosphere is crucial for understanding clouds."

The research was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK

Sony Smart Wireless Headset pro hits retail with $150 price in tow

Don't let the name fool you, Sony's Smart Wireless Headset pro won't clip on your ear. That's because it looks and functions more like a traditional MP3 player, using its powers of Bluetooth 2.0 to communicate with compatible Android devices. The two-tone peripheral comes with a headset, four sets of earbuds, USB cables and a 2GB microSD card pre-installed (expandable up to 32GB) to let you store music. If the feature set stopped right there, this accessory would be just another underwhelming PMP, but factor in its text-to-speech functionality and you get a PDA of sorts to keep you abreast of incoming emails, texts and social media updates. The device will also let users receive incoming voice calls and even dial-out using a recent call list. It's hitting Sony's online and retail shops now, so if you've got a spare $150 and a taste for extraneous peripherals -- by all means, take the plunge.

Ways by which a Landscaping Expert Can Keep Out Weeds and Other

Lawn maintenance needs certain talents, expertise, and above all, patience. It is not always the easiest thing to maintain your lawn no matter its size--it's an undertaking best left to pros. Nevertheless, no matter how much maintenance you give your back yard, some complications often tend to sneak up on it without your knowledge. Weeds are a remarkably clear and all too persistent illustration of this sad fact.

The more extensive your lawn, the more care it should get--and the more troubles you may disregard. These issues always go undetected at the beginning, yet if left alone, they can ruin all your labors in as little as two seasons. Here are some of the most common things you need to prevent.

Crab Grass

The most problematic thing about crab grass is that it spreads its branches in all directions parallel to the ground. Its wider-bladed leaves tend to splay over the more slender and thinner lawn grass, robbing it of sunlight. Florida receives increased doses of sunlight than the more northern states; thus, lawn grass here is a lot more dependent on sunlight, making crab grass a considerable risk.

Pulling them out separately could prove effective for a couple of stalks of crab grass, yet when they've taken over the whole area, it's practically an exercise in futility to get rid of them effectively this way. This is when a qualified landscaping contractor can assist you. They use certain herbicides that are usually administered throughout spring.

Bare Places.

A lot of factors may produce bald patches on your yard: weeds, insects, dog pee, and, inadequate maintenance all contribute to it. No matter the source, a Boca Raton landscaping expert highly recommends dealing with it without delay to prevent it from spreading and afflicting other regions. For example, if the bare spots are the result of weed infestation, then you should uproot them first before you could start reseeding.

Thatch

According to reputable Coral Springs landscaping professionals in Florida, thatch is one more yard maintenance trouble that may often affect your yard. This is a brownish low-growing plant, the result of heavily fertilized and quickly grown grass. You can address this problem by yourself, or you can hire a landscaping company who will probably operate a grass aerator to get rid of all traces of dead turf.

Like it or not, your lawn somehow mirrors your perspective toward cleanliness as well as upkeep. Consequently, it has a considerable effect on the visitors' initial impressions of you. If your yard is being overrun by unwelcome plants, it's probably time to employ the services of a Weston landscaping company. To find out more relating to the most common lawn problems, you can visit ehow.com.

A Sampling of Texas' Overblown Reactions to Obamacare Ruling

At the end of the day yesterday, the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation sent a dispatch from its president, Brook Rawlings, reacting to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act.

"Make no mistake," Rawlings wrote. "This outcome is a net negative for every Texan -- and every American -- concerned with liberty and prosperity." Never mind that many of the millions of Texans who will have health coverage because of the law presumably also value liberty and prosperity. This is an ongoing battle for freedom.

We are in for the long haul. We understand what the Supreme Court has done. But we are not defeated. You see, we've been here before. We are Texans. We know what it's like to be in the most dire straits. Our forefathers held the line -- and lost -- at Refugio, San Patricio, Agua Dulce, Coleto, and the Alamo.

So, the fight against the health care law equivalent is being compared to an armed insurrection? Others used language that was slightly less martial. Rick Perry called the decision "a stomach punch to the American economy." Comptroller Susan Combs called it an "attack on personal liberty."

Tyler Rep. Louie Gohmert, "visibly angry," at least steered clear of overtly violent imagery on the steps of the Supreme Court.

When in the course of human events it becomes clear that you have people who will not follow the law, it's time to use orderly methods set forth in the Constitution to remove them from their offices, and get people who will abide by their oaths.

Then he called Obama and Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan liars and called for an investigation of the latter.

The overblown rhetoric isn't particularly surprising given the tone of the debate over the past two years, but I was naive enough to expect that the Supreme Court's decision on health care would inspire a brief round of bloviation but ultimately quiet the debate, allow Texas to get around to implementing the insurance exchanges it's been dragging its feet on and deciding whether to implement

Instead, it looks like there will be an concerted and painfully prolonged effort by Republicans to repeal the law despite the fact that, with the makeup of the Senate what it is, the chances of that happening are nil.

The Affordable Care Act is deeply flawed. It's a messy compromise that completely satisfies no one, it doesn't really solve ballooning healthcare costs, and its a windfall for insurance companies. But it's not a step toward communism, it's not going to kill the economy, and it's not an assault on personal liberty. So it's time to take a deep breath and move on.
