Young people suffering from cancer need not to be afraid of their coming generation as it has been found that the offspring of cancer patients doesn?t carry the side effects of cancer treatment. There is no doubt that the chemotherapy and other type of cancer therapy sometime leaves a horrifying experience upon cancer patients.
For long, the medical experts were fearful that the side effects of cancer treatment might also be seen over the offspring of the young cancer patients. But according to the recent study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the offspring of young cancer patients are free from the side effects.
The lead author of the study, Lisa Signorello, was reported of saying, ?Childhood cancer survivors face real reproductive concerns, including unknowns related to the effects of therapy. But, hopefully this study will provide some reassurance that their children are unlikely to be at increased risk for genetic defects stemming from their earlier treatment?.
For the study, the researchers analyzed the data of the young cancer patients. The data was procured from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. In the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, about 20,000 childhood cancer survivors were analyzed from 1970 to 1986.
During the recent study, the researchers contracted the young cancer survivors and questions related to their sexual activity and adult age. It was found that only 2.7% of the babies born from cancer survivors had some birth defects.
The defects included Down syndrome, abnormally short stature (achondroplasia) or cleft lip. It has also been revealed that 3% of women who received chemotherapy agents at the time of cancer had babies with genetic birth defect.
Although it has been found that young cancer survivor?s offspring are free from the side effects of cancer treatment, further study is required to be conducted.
