Stockholm fest boosts femme helmers

Sweden's emerging female feature film directors have the chance to get their next project fully funded under a prize launched Sunday by the Stockholm film festival in Cannes. The $780,000 production fund -- mostly backed by leading Swedish telecom Telia -- will be awarded for the first time at the fest's 22nd edition in November.Designed to support a female director at the beginning of her career, applicants must have a producer, a complete script and be ready to go into production, said Git Scheynius, fest director. The director is expected to premiere the winning film at the following year's fest.Others among the five to 10 nominees will each receive around $39,000 in development coin for their projects. The fest has a track record of supporting emerging local talent -- and awarding international female directors. Last year, Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" took kudos for best film and actress for Jennifer Lawrence."We are now looking for an internationally recognized female director as a mentor to support the winner," Scheynius told Variety.
