Sports fans in for TV treat

Yesterday, BT Sport announced more than 10,000 pubs, clubs, betting shops, hotels and other commercial premises have signed up.

BT paid ?738million for the rights to show 38 top games each season for the next three years in its bid to break Sky's grip on armchair sports fans by enabling its broadband customers to watch for free. It has signed up ex-players including Michael Owen and Steve McManaman for a presenting team that includes ex-BBC man Jake Humphrey.

On Thursday, it announced it had tripled its viewing numbers to three million by signing a deal with Virgin Media.

This weekend, BT are first into action with live coverage of the 12.45pm match between Liverpool and Stoke City. Sky has risen to the challenge with a day of free football.

In the Sky studio, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville will have plenty to talk about as Swansea City take on Manchester United. On Sunday, it has Chelsea playing Hull City.

Yesterday, BT Sport's Bruce Cuthbert said: "Signing up more than 10,000 commercial customers before a ball is kicked in the Premier League is a fantastic achievement."
