Since 1976, the Iowa caucuses have been the kickoff for party primaries and caucuses around the nation, the true start of nomination season for U.S. presidential candidates. With just eight votes separating the top two winners of the Iowa Republican caucus, according to ABC News, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, all eyes are now on New Hampshire. Here are the winning results for the last 10 New Hampshire primaries:
1972
Democrat: According to New Hampshire's state website, Edmund Muskie narrowly beat George McGovern, who eventually gained the nomination.
Republican: Incumbent Richard Nixon, the presumptive nominee
Presidential winner: Nixon
1976
Democrat: According to Timelines, Jimmy Carter, at the time dubbed "Jimmy Who?," beat out better known rival Morris "King Mo" Udall, and went on to gain the Democratic nomination.
Republican: Incumbent Gerald Ford narrowly beat out challenger Ronald Reagan
Presidential winner: Carter
1980
Democrat: Incumbent Jimmy Carter fought off tough primary challenge from Ted Kennedy and went on to win the nomination.
Republican: Ronald Reagan, who had been unsuccessful in 1976 against Gerald Ford, beat out George H.W. Bush to gain the nomination and then selected Bush as his running mate.
Presidential winner: Reagan
1984
Democrat: Gary Hart beat out Walter Mondale, but a sexual scandal with Donna Rice lead to his ouster, and Mondale went on to win the nomination.
Republican: Incumbent Ronald Reagan ran for re-election, virtually unopposed.
Presidential winner: Reagan, in one of history's most landslide victories, according to the BBC, a complete embarrassment to Mondale and running mate Geraldine Ferraro.
1988
Democrat: According to JSTOR, Michael Dukakis, who had come in third in Iowa, won the New Hampshire primary and went on to gain the Democratic nomination.
Republican: According to New Hampshire's state website, Vice President George H.W. Bush beat out rival, Sen. Bob Dole, and went on to secure his party's nomination.
Presidential winner: Bush.
1992
Democrat: Paul Tsongas narrowly beat challenger Bill Clinton, who had faltered after revelations of an alleged affair with Gennifer Flowers. Clinton went on to wrestle the nomination away from rivals, declaring himself "the comeback kid."
Republican: Despite a challenge from Pat Buchanan, George H.W. Bush prevailed in New Hampshire.
Presidential winner: Clinton. Clinton is the first person in history to lose the New Hampshire primary, and gain the presidency in the same election.
1996
Democrat: President Bill Clinton ran virtually unopposed in New Hampshire.
Republican: According to Human Events, Pat Buchanan beat out Rival Bob Dole, but Dole went on to win his party's nomination.
Presidential winner: Clinton easily won re-election.
2000
Democrat: According to the Daily KOS, Vice President Al Gore won in New Hampshire and went on to secure his party's nomination.
Republican: According to Fact Check.Org, George W. Bush, after a win in Iowa, lost New Hampshire to rival, Sen. John McCain, but went on to win his party's nomination.
Presidential winner: George W. Bush, who lost the popular vote, but won the electoral college vote, in the most hotly contested election in history.
2004
Democrats: According to CNN, John Kerry won handedly, beating Howard Dean by 14 points.
Republican: Incumbent George W. Bush, virtually unopposed
Presidential winner: Bush
2008
Democrat: According to CNN, Hillary Clinton squarely beat Barack Obama, who went on to win the party's nomination.
Republican: John McCain won New Hampshire in a landslide.
Presidential winner: Barack Obama, becoming America's first African-American president.
