Sierra Club joins America's Cup opponents in legal appeal | Sarah ...

The Sierra Club is the latest group to appeal the environmental impact report for the 34th America?s Cup yacht race.

Citing a concern that the report does not adequately address sediment and water pollution issues that could arise from dredging parts of the Bay for the 2013 regatta, the group is appealing the Planning Commission?s approval of the document.

?One of the reasons we filed the appeal is to get more information,? said Rebecca Evans, chair of the San Francisco Group Sierra Club. ?Even though Board of Supervisors will probably approve the certification, at least this provides some more public education about what?s going on.

?We just want to make sure The City has a clean, green sustainable event,? Evans said.

The Sierra Club?s appeal will be folded into a previously filed appeal scheduled to go before the Board of Supervisors on Jan. 10, according to Rick Caldeira of the board?s Clerk?s Office. But because The City must give 10 days of public notice for all appeal hearings, the board is now expected to vote on Jan. 10 to continue the appeal to Jan. 24, Caldeira said.

The first appeal was filed by the environmental groups San Francisco Tomorrow, Telegraph Hill Dwellers, Golden Gate Audubon Society and Waterfront Watch.
