YAKIMA, Wash. -- The national study on 20,000 women was paid for by the the National Cancer Institute.

It determined the drugs Tamoxifen and Raloxifene can reduce chances of getting breast cancer by half.

A Yakima woman who lost her mom to breast cancer tells us why she participated.

"I just wanted to do something. It was just my way of trying to pay something forward. I had no risk health, to my knowledge, that either drug would hurt, and my risks were high of contacting breast cancer," said Cindy Hovland-Conner.

The FDA has approved both drugs for the treatment of breast cancer.
