Mayor Fischer heads to Frankfort in support of local option tax

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer heads to Frankfort Wednesday to join other Kentucky leaders to testify about a local option sales tax initiative.

Right now, Kentucky sales tax is 6 cents.

If a community approved that temporary sales tax, it could go to 7 cents.

Before it even gets to that point, several things have to happen.

First, a state legislative committee has to give the idea a thumbs up.

Fischer will testify in front of that committee on Wednesday.

A temporary sales tax would be allocated for specific projects in the community only.

Examples of that include new parks, roads, business districts or sports venues.

"However you shake it or bake it, there are going to be certain groups in this community that might not like going down a particular path, but I also hope that if somebody is really, truly interested in economic development and putting Louisville in the forefront then we need to come to some compromise and move the city forward," said seventh district Metro Councilman Ken Fleming.

In addition to Wednesday's commitee,?Voters would first have to vote if they want to amend the constitution.
